Jazz Mood

CD (Item 496533) Savoy, 1957 — Condition: Used

CD

✈
Beautiful work from Brother Yusef, cut during his early days with Savoy, when he was hitting a perfect mix of soul jazz, hardbop, and more exotic instrumentation. This set features his great quintet with Curtis Fuller, Hugh Lawson, and Louis Hayes – and Yusef plays a number of other strange percussive and reed instruments, in addition to his usual tenor. The tracks are haunting, and all originals. Titles include "Blues In Space", "Morning", "Metaphor", and "The Beginning". Very nice!  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Yusef Lateef

Cry Tender
Prestige/OJC, 1959. Used
Wonderful late 50s work by Yusef Lateef – played in that "jazz exotic" style he was using to perfect form at the time, a mixture of the lyrical hard bop of the Horace Silver group, with some of the more spare and eastern styles used by groups like the early Sun Ra Arkestra. The ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by the mighty Yusef Lateef – and that's really saying a lot, given his fantastic legacy of albums! The set's a live one, which is a bit unusual in Lateef's catalog at this time – and the concert setting is perhaps a window onto some of his more ... CD
Atlantic, 1991. Used
Features Gian-Franco Ricci on piano, Christopher Newland and Mark Irose on guitar, and Chinyere Nnenna Freelon on vocals. CD

Dizzy Gillespie

Timeless Dizzy Gillespie

Savoy/Denon (Japan), 1956. Used
One of the best dates ever as a leader from trumpeter Joe Wilder – and one of the few to have a really relaxed, open sort of format! Joe's not tied up in gimmicks or larger groups here – and he really sparkles in the company of a quartet that features Hank Jones on piano, Wendell ... CD

Art Pepper

Surf Ride
Savoy, 1952/1954. Used
A classic 50s album on Savoy – a set that's almost as memorable for its cartoony cover as it is for the great Art Pepper material on the record! Pepper's tone here is wonderful – that sharper-edged, more soulful approach that you often get in his smaller label 50s work – a nice ... CD

Donald Byrd

Byrd's Word
Savoy, 1955. Used
One of Donald Byrd's earliest sessions as a leader – a hard and heavy all-star set that features a quintet with Frank Foster on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Kenny Clarke on drums, and Dave Chambers on bass. The tracks all are long and have that almost blowing session Savoy approach – ... CD
Savoy (Japan), Late 50s. Used
One of the coolest albums that Curtis Fuller ever recorded for Savoy – a sharp-edged set of modern jazz that really matches the abstract painting on its cover! Fuller's material from this point is always pretty darn great, but this album seems to go ever farther than usual – coming ... CD

Dexter Gordon

Dexter Rides Again
Savoy, Mid 40s. Used
Classic early bop material from Dexter Gordon – originally issued as 78s in the 40s, and packaged here in a hip 50s album with a very groovy cover! The set features work from 1945, 1946, and 1947 – with Gordon in different three different groups – one with Leo Parker on baritone ... CD
Savoy/Atlantic, Late 40s. Used 4 CDs
Live recordings from the Royal Roost, Carnegie Hall, and an unidentified venue here in Chicago. CD
Savoy (Japan), Mid 40s. Used
The title gets it right – as these recordings are definitely some of the first-ever by Miles Davis – some done under his own name, some as a key sideman with other artists! The first 8 cuts feature Davis with group of his own, featuring his famous boss of the time, Charlie Parker, on ... CD
Savoy, Early 50s. Used
Pretty great Charlie Parker material – issued by Savoy a number of years after his death, and obtained from obscure sources, with no data on the players on the sessions. The tracks are all nice and long, with plenty of solo space – and the recording quality is pretty good overall, ... CD
