Forget what you think about Ferguson – this is a very hip album! Sure, Maynard's a bit hokey on the solos – but he's surrounded himself with a wonderful group that includes Jaki Byard, Don Menza, Willie Maiden, Lanny Morgan, Don Rader, and Rufus Jones. The tracks are a lot edgier than ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the lesser-remembered Basie sessions for Roulette – but one of the best ones too! The album follows nicely in the "dance" style of Basie's earlier albums for Clef – by offering a set of work that was typical of that the group might have performed on one of their more ... The genius of Basie meets the genius of Quincy Jones – a 60s pairing that's every bit as great as the 50s pairing of Basie and Neal Hefti! Jones and Basie worked together in a number of settings during the 60s – including a very successful album for Frank Sinatra on Reprise – but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Breakfast Dance & Barbecue? Our stomachs are growling already! The album's a great little live set from Basie – recorded at the Americana Hotel in Miami at 2 in the morning – and is one of the totally great, totally smoking live sessions that Basie recorded for Roulette – ... LP, Vinyl record album
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an ... LP, Vinyl record album
The last full album from Caldera – and a wonderful set that's a perfect cap to their classic late 70s run on Capitol Records! The groove here is fusion, but with lots of Latin undercurrents – especially on the percussion, which rumbles up from the bottom to make for a nicely organic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Sublime late live work from Bill Evans – a well-recorded performance for French radio, and one that really stands out from some of the scratchier late 70s concerts on the market! Bill's working here with a sound as sensitive and picturesque as the cover image – never pushing things too ... LP, Vinyl record album
A brilliant album that would forever change the way the organ was used in jazz! The set's the greatest contribution ever from organist Larry Young – a lean and modal session recorded with help from a young quartet that includes Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson, and Elvin Jones – all leaping ...
