Eddie Allen was a relatively young trumpeter at the time of this date – but he's got some very solid grounding from a mature trio that features Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Carl Allen on drums! On another label, like Muse, the set might have a rougher sort of feel – but here, on Venus, it comes across with a nice degree of focus and class – never too overly thought-out, but still with a direction that really works well for Allen's soulful trumpet and flugelhorn lines.
