Another wonderful conceptual effort from pianist Jason Moran – perhaps the most exciting young musician recording for new millenium Blue Note! Artist In Residence features compositions that Moran and collaborators have done for exhibitions at New York's Dia:Beacon museum, Minneapolis's Walker Arts Center, Jazz At Lincoln Center's Rose Hall in NY – each exhibit very different, but the composed pieces flow very naturally on the album, and make for sort of a meditation on the artistic process in a fairly broad sense. That's a fussy, clinical sounding approach – but Moran's a very passionate player, with a highly rhythmic, and often very melodic sound – accompanied by his excellent core group of Marvin Sewell on guitar, Tarus Mateen on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums – with guest voice, percussion, and trumpet. We're dying for Moran to give us another killer, straight up, (seemingly) concept-free modern jazz classic a la 2001's Black Stars LP (the record that reminded us how great Sam Rivers remains), but everything he touches is well worth a listen!
