Orlando's Afro Ideas 1969-1972

CD (Item 494704) Ekosound (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

A fantastic batch of Nigerian funk from the great Orlando Julius – some of the most dynamic Afrobeat recordings ever made! These recordings document Orlando's years with his band the Afro Sounders, which evolved from his earlier band the Modern Aces in the mid 60s, and following his titanic 1966 classic Super Afro Soul. As was the case with that amazing album, Orlando blends the deeply percussive African rhythms with a tightness and a hard wallop learned from American soul and R&B – with some very proud, righteous odes to the spirit of the Nigerian people. The set features the amazing cut "James Brown Ride On", which not only serves as a great Nigerian tribute to the American godfather (complete with English lyrics) but it also does a wonderful job of highlighting the cross-cultural elements that make Afrofunk the force that it was, and still is! Amazing, essential stuff – some of the tightest Afrobeat you'll ever hear, and a joy to see so lovingly reissued! Other tracks include "Home Sweet Home", "Psychedelic Afro Shop", "Mura Sise", "Esamei Sate", "Alo Mi Alo", "Ketekete Koro", "New Apala Afro" and more!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

A well-done collection of some of King Sunny Ade's first recordings in Nigeria – presented in a package with great sound, and a heck of a lot of music overall! The work here has been reissued on other CDs by African Songs in the UK, but this collection is much more all-encompassing – ... CD

Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of Africa

Pyramids
PMG (Austria), 1979. Used
Bala Miller's got a great pan-African group here – one that's more from the western side of the scene, despite the pyramids mentioned in their name – with players hailing from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon – all coming together in a mighty righteous style! The music is fairly ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1979. Used
Their name may be a mouthful, but the Black Children Sledge Funk Band have a groove that's nice and lean – a wicked blend of basslines, percussion, and lots of riffing guitar – plus these very cool keyboards that wander over the grooves and give the whole thing a sweetly spacey vibe! ... CD

Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee

While there was no naked bald lady on the cover of Jass-Ay-Lay-Dee, it is actually a move back towards the sweatier funk sounds of their more classic LPs. There's some tight playing and solid songwriting going on here, too, with a bit less of the smooth, sultry grooves with funky touches that ... CD
