Original Jam Master Vol 3 – Mellow Madness

CD (Item 493922) Blue Note, Late 60s/Early 70s — Condition: Used
$16.99 ...

CD

Some of the funkiest work on guitar ever recorded – and a great overview of the legendary sessions that Grant Green recorded for Blue Note in the late 60s and early 70s! Years back, the label used to disown these sessions – claiming they were more commercial and lower-quality than Green's original, earlier 60s sessions for the company. But now, thanks to the attention given the music by beatheads worldwide, Blue Note's finally giving this music its due – and bringing together the best Grant Green work from this time in a massive 3 volume series! The vibe here was often inspired by mainstream soul and funk of the time – but taken much more into the jazz side of the spectrum, as Green opens up with long weaving solos that still stand as some of the best guitar work in jazz at the time. Instrumentation is often raw and rough – using heavy drums, Hammond, and a bit of horns to support Grant's solos – and given that most of these tracks are nice and long, there's often plenty of space for other instrumental jamming as well. Volume 3 features 5 long tracks – "Cease The Bombing", "Maiden Voyage", "Day In The Life", "Down Here On The Ground", and "Fancy Free".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Used CD Grade

We use the all-encompassing grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or packaging details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the CD. This might include, but isn't limited to, scratches, tracks that skip, case/insert damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A funky nugget from the second Blue Note chapter of guitarist Grant Green – that wonderful point when he shifted into more funk-based styles from his hardbop work at the start – and found a way to unlock a whole new side of his talents! The approach here is similar to some of the funky ... CD

A set titled after a Beatles hit of the 60s, but one that's got a lot more depth than that – as the record is a landmark moment in the development of organ/guitar jazz at the time – a set that features the key pairing of guitarist Grant Green and Hammond modernist Larry Young! As with ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used
A really fantastic record from Blue Note guitar genius Grant Green – and a set that's got a sound that goes way past his goofy look on the cover! The title's a bit right – in that there's something of a Latin vibe going on, with more percussion than usual in a small group – but ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used
A really fantastic album from guitarist Grant Green – a set that's every bit as great as his other Blue Note funk albums from the time – but in a very different way! First off, the group has vibes – played by the more obscure Willie Bivens, sometimes with this hard chromatic ... CD

Grant Green

Born To Be Blue
Blue Note, 1962. Used
A rare one from Grant Green – recorded in 1962, but not issued until 1985. The set's one of Green's early classics recorded with pianist Sonny Clark – a deeply soulful player who really had the right feel for Green's more lyrical soul jazz numbers. The rest of the group includes Ike ... CD

Although Grant Green has been getting a lot of attention lately for his heavy-duty funk work of the late 60s, it's the subtly beautiful work of the early 60's that first caught our attention years ago.
