❔

A nicely rootsy little album from Maria Bethania – recorded during a period when some of her music could often sound much fuller and more electric! The album's got subtle help from Toninho Horta, Dori Caymmi, and Guto Graca Mello – all of whom arrange Maria's vocals in a sophisticated singer/songwriter sort of mode – very personal, often spare, and used with a sensitivity to the lyrics that's really wonderful. The Terra Trio also play on the record, and titles include "Ciclo", "Filosofia Pura", "Motriz", "Vinho", "Lua", "Cantar Pra Fazer O Sol Adormecer", and "Rio De Janeiro".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Philips, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Early Jorge Ben stuff – very swingin', with a tight jazzy sound. Includes a lot of his early compositions, played by a big orchestra. With the cuts "Zope Zope", "Samba Menina", and "Samba Legal" – but the whole album is fantastic! Hard raspy Brazilian ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips (Brazil), Mid 60s. Very Good+
A lively batch of pop samba stuff from this big Brazilian artist of the 60's. The tracks are all fairly uptempo, with a sing song rhythm sound, and a nice 60's Brazilian pop groove. Tracks include "Leva Meu Samba", "Saudade Dela", "Sai Do Meu Caminho", "Vida De ... LP, Vinyl record album
Philips (Brazil), Early 60s. Very Good
A rare bit of samba jazz from Brazil – the only album we've ever seen by this Hammond-lead combo featuring organist Paulo Roberto! Roberto's sound is clean and lean – very much in the spirit of Walter Wanderley from the same period, and backed here with a similar blend of snapping ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66

Crystal Illusions
A&M, 1969. Very Good+
Dreamy loveliness from Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66! The album's one of their true 60s classics for A&M – a sublime blend of female vocals, Brazilian rhythms, and jazzy instrumentation – groovily dancing with a light and breezy sound that influenced a generation, and which still ... Atlantic, 1964. Very Good+
Early bossa jazz from Sergio Mendes – recorded with his famous Bossa Rio combo, in the years before he moved to America! The album's a classic in Brazilian jazz – a tight album of bossa-inflected jazz tunes played with razor-sharp precision, handled with a style that went on to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Equinox
A&M, 1968. Very Good
The second album by Sergio and crew – and a real push forward for the group! The basic format of two-female harmony leads is still in place – but for some reason, this album gives a bit more of a nod to Brazilian roots than before, and really spices things up with an even more ... Paulinho Da Costa

Sunrise
Pablo, 1984. Very Good+
Sweet Brazilian rhythms – one of the tightest of the Pablo albums by Paulinho Da Costa, but still a nice batch of Brazilian tinged fusion, with a smooth production style that reminds us of some of the Japanese albums of the same sort during the late 70s! The set was recorded in LA, with help ... LP, Vinyl record album
Som Maior (Brazil), Early 60s. Near Mint-
Very groovy album of bossa nova organ tracks – with a sound that's similar to Walter Wanderley, Ed Lincoln, or other 60's Brazilian organ players. The groove is hard fast samba – similar to the early Deodato albums we've been stocking – and it's light and airy, and with a good ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tania Maria

Lady From Brazil
Manhattan/EMI, 1986. Near Mint-
You know, despite the fact that this one was recorded in the mid 80s, when we felt that Tania's great jazzy vocal style was being buried in excessive arrangements – in retrospect, it's actually got some darn nice moments. These include the great "Tanoca Vignette", a lively number ... LP, Vinyl record album
