Aurora

LP (Item 493358) Atlantic, 1976 — Condition: Sealed
One of the hippest of Jean Luc Ponty's mainstream efforts from the 70s – a tightly jamming album that's made even better by plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen! Rushen's sound really brings a warmer, more soulful groove to the record – stretching out with flowing solos that remind us a lot of her own early work for Prestige, placed here as a nice contrast to the heavy guitar work of Darryl Stuermer and the sometimes-frenetic work on violin by Ponty. Tracks have a definite rock fusion approach, but still offer up enough jazzy moments – and titles include "Is Once Enough", "Renaissance", "Aurora (parts 1 & 2)", "Passenger Of The Dark", and "Lost Forest".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Common Ground
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! Complete Yusef Lateef
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good-
A soulful late 60s outing for Brother Yusef – one of his first, and one of his best, albums for Atlantic! Despite the misleading title, this isn't really the "complete" Yusef Lateef (it would have to be a 50 LP set for that!) – but the record is a nice slice of Yusef's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! Yusef Lateef

Suite 16
Atlantic, 1970. Very Good
A groundbreaking set from Yusef Lateef – one that mixes together a number of different soul jazz styles! Inflated Tear

A landmark album from Roland Kirk – one of his key 60s sides for Atlantic records, and an amazing blend of soul jazz, hardbop, and freer thinking styles! Bobbi Humphrey

Tailor Made
Epic, 1977. Very Good
Sure, it's after the Blue Note/Larry Mizell years – but Bobbi's still kicking ass! Instead of Larry Mizell, Bobbi's working with Skip Scarborough – and she's hitting a groove that's a bit smoother and more modern than before, but every bit as sweetly funky and seriously soulful.
