Morning Side Of Love Vol 2 – A Collection Of Chill Out Grooves From The Past

LP (Item 493002) Irma (Italy), 1960s/1970s — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
Forget the cheesy title and cover – this is a great compilation, with some really wonderful tracks from the 70s! Like the first set in this series, the focus is on older grooves that have a kicked-back, chilled-out approach to funk – and as such, the set is stuffed with wonderful tunes that we might have missed otherwise! There's a real genius to the package – similar to Irma's Quiet Moments compilation – and the track selection goes way past the obvious, or the familiar, to include tracks that have been locked away on older albums by artists that you might already know. The whole thing's great – as much of a delight in the morning as it is in the middle of the night – with tracks that include "Reflections" by Bill Conti, "Poobli" by Alphonze Mouzon, "Doubting Thomas" by Michel Legrand, "Chutney" by Mandrill, "Cha Chita" by El Chicano, "Night Breeze" by Bobby Lyle, "Feel The Vibe" by Loose Ends, "Close The Door" by Rufus, "The City" by Mark & Almond, "Suzanne" by Gary McFarland, "Snow Queen" by The City, "Say No More" by The Peddlers, "From Here To Eternity" by Engelbert Humperdink, "Walking In The Wind" by Traffic, "The Visit" by The Cyrkle, and "Elegy" by Colosseum. And we should warn you, album 2 has a few especially nice surprises – rock tunes we thought we'd never hear again, settled next to some great funky groovers. 26 tracks on 2LPs.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chess/Mercury (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+
A really great UK collection – one that brings together some very hip Chess Records material from the late 60s and early 70s, mostly spun together as if you were hearing a British soul DJ serve the tracks up in a club! Omnivore, Early 70s. Sealed
Rare funk from the Oaktown scene of the early 70s – most of it previously unreleased! Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! SOUL, 1968. Near Mint-
Heavy duty instrumentals from this legendary Detroit tenor giant! This album's one of Jr's best – recorded with a rawer tone than later work, almost a mixture of funky 45 and R&B grooving. Motown favorites like "Come See About Me" and "What Does It Take To Win Your ... LP, Vinyl record album

A rare modern jazz set from the early 60s – noteworthy in that it's one of the few recordings from the time of Chicago tenorist Joe Daley – who works here in a trio with the young Hal Russell on drums! A great one from Sonny Fortune – done with the fusiony sound he was working so well with at the time, and still filled with a tight conception and an incredible group of musicians who bring depth and deliver some really great solos! One of Gal Costa's mellow mainstream sides from the 80s – hardly the sort of work you might have imagined during the heady Tropicalia years, yet still very much the top of the heap for MPB at the time!
