A very unusual session by Jack Sheldon – but one that also really captures the Sheldon that was well known to the mainstream in the 60s, but hardly ever caught this way on record! Sheldon first came to fame as a straight jazz trumpeter on the LA scene of the mid 50s – but as the 60s wore on, Jack really started grooming himself as an overall entertainer – not just one who played trumpet, but who also sang and did a bit of comedy patter along with the tunes – a great choice, given that Sheldon had a nutty sense of humor that was one of his strongest calling cards in the jazz community. And while Sheldon was a frequent guest on TV shows of the 60s and 70s, where he'd work in this kind of mode, most of his albums never really captured that side of his talents. This excellent live set from 1965 really changes that fact – as it shows Sheldon working in all 3 modes wonderfully. The group is a quintet with Howard Roberts on guitar, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – and Jack Marshall joins in on vocals on a few of the more complicated numbers with Jack – doing some great comedy schtick on parodies of "Girl From Ipanema", "What Kind Of Fool Am I", and "Goldfinger". Other tracks include the original vocal tunes "Jack's Blues", "Bodega Bay", and "Wait & See" – plus versions of "She's A Woman", "You Fascinate Me So", and "Steeplechase". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
