Plenty of colors here – a classic 80s recording from Muhal Richard Abrams, of the sort that showed him to be one of the most focused, expressive members of the AACM at the time! The core group features John Purcell on saxes, Dave Holland on cello, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – and John Blake plays violin on a few numbers, and Holland switches to bass on two tracks too. The sound is more stripped down than some of Abrams' other recordings – quite spacious and introspective at times, really showing the sensitive side of his music, and reminding us that he can be a very soulful improviser, when he gives himself the chance.
