✈

One of the few albums as a leader recorded by Dewey Redman during the years of his strongest contributions to avant garde jazz – a post-Coltrane, post-Ayler session that's filled with touches of the spiritualism that can be found in the work of other Impulse labelmates, such as Marion Brown or Archie Shepp. In a way, the album's almost a "new thing" record recorded after the new thing era – not too out, but tentatively exploratory, and expressing some of the ideals of the 70s loft jazz scene. Players include Ted Daniel on trumpet, Jane Robertson on cello, Sirone on bass, and Danny Johnson on percussion – and titles include "Walls-Bridges", "Innerconnection", "Boody", and "Sunlanding". CD features 4 bonus tracks – "QOW", "Funcitydues", "Joie De Vivre", and "Seeds & Deeds".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print. Digipack has significant wear, a clear promo sticker on the front, and a mark through the barcode.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Impulse, 1966. Used
One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to ... CD

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Used
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Journey In Satchidananda
Impulse, 1971. Used
Arguably the most classic Alice Coltrane album on Impulse – and a strong group effort that features some great work from Pharoah Sanders! Coltrane leads two different small combos on the record – both with Sanders on saxes, plus either Cecil McBee or Charlie Haden on bass, and Rashied ... CD

A classic of spiritual, soulful jazz – and one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums! The set was recorded in New York after a few free and festive years in Paris, and it's an amazing about-face that has Archie stepping into a world of righteous, full-on, political, and funky themes – the ... CD

One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the ... CD

Sun Ship
Impulse, 1965. Used
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but ... CD
Impulse, 1962. Used
The meeting of two classic talents late in their careers – in a setting that's ideal to bring out all the complexity of their well-honed genius! The approach of the album is mostly an Ellington one – as the group features some of Duke's stalwarts, like Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges, Harry ... CD

Stellar Regions
Impulse, 1967. Used
Unreleased gems from the great John Coltrane – one of those really special sessions that was recorded at a time when he was really pushing forward creatively, but never got issued because of a backlog of recordings! This set didn't see release until the 90s – and it provided a ... CD

Grover Washington Jr

Time Out Of Mind
Columbia, 1989. Used
Time Out Of Mind's title track is a cover of the Steely Dan classic, circa Gaucho – and this album finds Grover embracing the 80s a lot more than his previous album for Columbia. A mix of moods, with some electric funky flourishes and fusiony keys and synths. Titles include "Jamaica&quo ... CD
