Without You In My Life

LP (Item 4919) Dakar, 1972 — Condition: Sealed

Warm and tender work from the mighty Tyrone Davis – really singing here at the height of his early powers, in that wonderful blend of the rough and smooth that made him so unique! Davis has a gritty touch in his singing style, but the backings have that perfect Brunswick Chicago soul approach – a blend that's laid out perfectly in the album's arrangements from Monk Higgins, Willie Henderson, and Tom Tom Washington! Tyrone's a singer who's really a cut above – especially on his early work like this – able to charm and convince us with just about any sort of lyric. Titles include "Wrapped Up In Your Warm & Tender Love", "I'm Just Your Man", "There It Is", "I Had It All the Time", and "True Love Is Hard to Find".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original pressing! Cover has a cutout hole.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Barbara Mason

Love's The Thing
Buddah, 1975. Very Good+
A really great step forward for Barbara Mason – a record that's got her working in a more mature mode than before, and a deeper soul style as well! One of the bigger developments of Barbara Mason's career was her participation in the "answer song" cycle that circulated around ... LP, Vinyl record album

Norman Feels

Norman Feels
Just Sunshine, 1973. Sealed Gatefold
Mellow soul, sweeping strings, and sweet electric keys – a stone 70s classic from Norman Feels – one of the greatest soul singers you've never heard before! The album's Norman's first (of two), and is a vastly under-recognized gem – the kind of record that easily stands next to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vernon Burch

Get Up
Chocolate City/Casablanca, 1979. Near Mint-
Bouncy, bubbly soul from Vernon Burch – one of his stone dancefloor classics from the 70s, served up with a groove that never quits! Jerry Butler

Folk Songs
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Sealed
A great lost album from Jerry – and a key link in the hip Chicago scene that produced Terry Callier and Oscar Brown Jr! Sure, you might think of the album as a silly "cash in on the folk craze" effort – but Jerry keeps it soulful throughout, and thanks to some wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Padlock – Special Mixes By Larry Levan
Garage/Island, 1983. Very Good+
A mini-LP, but one that packs more punch than most full length sets – thanks to a top-shelf lineup all the way through! The set's a project put together by Sly & Robbie, and recorded at Compass Point Studios – all with a groove that's kind of a dubbier take on the sound of New York ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shock

Waves
Fantasy, 1982. Very Good+
Early 80s funky soul from Shock – heavy on the bass and keyboards on the funky cuts, but nicely smooth and restrained on the mellower numbers. Stax, 1973. Near Mint-
A great mix of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and LA modes from Eddie Floyd – working here with help from Al Bell and Al Jackson in the studio, but also handling a fair bit of the proceedings himself! Titles include "Something To Write Home About", "Whatcha Gonna Do With My ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Earland

Live At The Lighthouse
Prestige, 1972. Very Good+

Jimmy McGriff & Richard Groove Holmes

Giants Of The Organ Come Together
Groove Merchant, 1973. Very Good+
Twin organs back to back – and a heck of a hard-wailing set from Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff! Ruben & The Jets (Frank Zappa)

Cruising With Ruben & The Jets
Verve, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
Frank Zappa's amazing tribute to the sounds of LA that inspired him in his youth – not just the early rock and roll of the late 50s, but the way the music was picked up and given a home by the scene in East LA! There's a surprising amount of nascent soul elements in the music here – ... LP, Vinyl record album
