Pure dark magic from Grover Washington – a record that was a megahit back in the 70s, but which still sounds amazing many decades later! There's a sound here that's completely sublime – and the album is to Grover's career what the first 2 CTI sets by Bob James were to his – a stretched-out, masterpiece of sublime jazzy energy – served up with a really spacious sound overall! Grover's sharp-edged sax is at the lead of the set – but the album's also awash in electric piano work from Bob James – and backings that are as lean, clean, and soulful as the best on CTI from the time. Titles include the killer "Black Frost" – a track that we never tire of – plus the hit "Mister Magic", and the cuts "Earth Tones" and "Passion Flower".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Come Morning
Elektra, 1981. Used
Grover Washington blows over some great arrangements from William Eaton – full, but lean too – and with the same sort of slinky groove that always worked best for Grover back at Kudu Records! The sound is tight, but never too slick – that magically soulful approach that always ... CD

Anthology
Motown, Mid 70s. Used 2 CDs
A tasty 2CD set that brings together some of the best soul jazz tracks from Grover's years at the Kudu label! As is well remembered by beatheads, Grover had an amazing style at the time – a snakey electric groove that was perfect for the sounds of the early 70s – playing soprano sax in ... CD

Grover Washington Jr

Soulful Strut
Columbia, 1996. Used
Bouncy soul from Grover Washington – a set that returns to his earlier roots in a space between soulful fusion and R&B! The slinky Washington soprano sax gets plenty of space in this set – blown with those seductive notes that always made Grover one of the most distinctive players ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1967. Used

Pete Rodriguez

Obstacles
Sunnyside, 2021. Used
Trumpeter Pete Rodriguez is the son of the legendary salsa singer Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez – but the vibe here is straight jazz, and with a nice current of darkness too! The bold tones from Pete's horn are echoed by the piano of the album's co-producer, Luis Perdomo – and ... CD

Surpresa
Sunnyside, 2021. Used
A beautiful little record that's a bit hard to peg – one that features guitars and vocals from both Jesse Harris and Vinicius Cantuaria, in modes that move between jazz, Brazilian, and other styles – often with the kind of gentle warmth that we love from Cantuaria's own recordings, but ... CD

Idea Of North
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2010. Used

Jamie Saft

Blue Dream
Rare Noise (UK), 2018. Used
Pianist Jamie Saft just seems to get more and more spiritual as the years go on – and this set is a beautiful summation of that trend – as his work here echoes strongly with the same bold brilliance that we love in classic albums by McCoy Tyner and Alice Coltrane! The setting's a bit ... CD
Verve, 1956. Used
One of the goofiest Christmas albums you'll ever hear! Spike cut this one with his City Slickers in the mid 50s – and it's kind of got the feel of a TV show gone crazy. Many of the songs start out in a sweet mode – often with vocals by a female singer or kids – but then a lot of ... CD
