✈
One of the hipper Lester Bowie sides from the 90s, but still cut very much in the horn-heavy groove of his Brass Fantasy years! The set's a live one, recorded in Switzerland in 1992 – and the group features Bowie at the head of an all-brass lineup of trumpets, French horn, tuba, and trombones – plus drums by Vinnie Johnson and percussion by Famoudou Don Moye. As with lots of the Bowie work of the time, there's a number of playful themes running through the set – as the Brass Fantasy sound is applied to a variety of stylistic settings. Titles include "Night Time", "For Louis", "Strange Fruit", "Remember The Time", "Black Or White", "Night Life", "Siesta For The Fiesta", and "The Great Pretender".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with ... CD

Blue Note, 1968. Used
Brilliant work from groundbreaking pianist McCoy Tyner – an album that has him firmly stepping out of the shadow of his old boss John Coltrane – and really taking off with a new level of spiritual jazz expression that Tyner's scene helped to foster in the 70s! The group on the set is a ... CD

Blue Mitchell

Cup Bearers
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used
One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that ... CD

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah
Atlantic, 1962. Used
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus – a record that fits nicely in his legacy of other recordings for Atlantic, but which has a very different approach! On this set, Mingus plays piano, and even sings a bit – using this messed-up take on blues roots, but filtered through a ... CD
Epic/Rev-Ola (UK), 1967. Used
A sweet bit of pop with lots of hipster late 60s touches – mixed male/female vocals coming together in weird styles on the tracks, in a mode that reminds us a lot of Spanky & Our Gang, and some of the California work under the Curt Boettcher/Millenium camp! The harmonies are nice and ... CD
