Basie At Birdland

LP (Item 48999) Roulette, 1961 — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

LP, Vinyl record album

4.80 5

A killer set from Count Basie – recorded during the height of his years at Roulette! The back cover of the record proclaims that "Basie Is Back Home" – clearly a bit by Birdland to lay claim to being the Count's home address, which is a bit of a challenge to his KC roots! Whatever the backstory, though, the set's a nice one – swinging hard in that completely tight 60s mode, with a great lineup that includes Frank Foster, Freddie Green, Thad Jones, and Bennie Powell. Tracks include "Good Time Blues", "Segue In C", "Little Pony", "Discommotion", and "Whirly Bird", which has a vocal by Jon Hendricks! (Emus pressing. Cover has light aging along the opening.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Lalo=Brilliance
Roulette, 1962. Near Mint-
Fantastic lost material by Lalo Schifrin – recorded in a style that's very similar to the excellent work he was doing for Dizzy Gillespie's group in the early 60s! The record features Leo Wright, also from Diz's group, playing some excellent alto and flute – and Jimmy Raney plays ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tweetie Pie
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good
Not as funky as the albums he'd later cut in the early 70s, but still a lot of short groovy little organ tracks with the Baby Cortez feel to them. Hugo & Luigi produce his renditions of pop songs and R&B numbers that were popular at the time, like "Shake", "Watermelon ... LP, Vinyl record album

Illinois Jacquet Flies Again
Roulette, 1959. Very Good
A really beautiful set, recorded after Jacquet's Verve years, and one that features his tenor blowing easily and soulfully over some larger arrangements with a mellow late night sound. We don't mean to imply that the album's a sleepy one, though – just that it's got this great relaxed ... LP, Vinyl record album
