Lester Bowie cooks it nicely with an organ-based group – and one that features work on the Hammond by Amina Claudine Myers! Despite the hokey cover of the set, there's actually a pretty nice sound to the record – one that extrapolates from an older soul jazz tradition, and gives the music some 80s New York and "Great Black Music" AACM inflections – expanding upon familiar themes with a strong sense of play, but one that also never goes too far outside to lose the groove. Myers sings a bit on the set, reminding us of what a lovely voice she's got – and other players include Steve Turre on trombone, James Carter on tenor sax, and Don Moye on drums and percussion. Titles include "Brooklyn Works Suite", "Ready Joe", "Guten Morgen (part 2)", "The Burglar", and "Sonala Nobala".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Columbia/DIW, 1991. Used
A great little session by Murray – recorded at that point in the early 90s when DIW was turning out some especially soulful records! The group on the set features Fred Hopkins on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, and Elvin Jones on drums – and although you might expect a Coltraney feel from ... CD

James Blood Ulmer

Blues Preacher
DIW/Columbia, 1994. Used
The title sort of gives this one away – as Ulmer's less out, and less rocking – and more playing in a gentler bluesy mode. He's on vocals, guitar, and flute – joined by Ronald Drayton on a second guitar, Mark Peterson on bass, and Aubrey Dayle on drums. Titles include "Jazz ... CD

Shakill's Warrior
DIW/Columbia, 1991. Used
A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – ... CD

Beautiful trio work from Geri Allen – recording here with a great group that features Paul Motian on drums and some especially great work from Charlie Haden on bass! Haden's bass really figures into the sound of most of the songs strongly – almost leading more than Allen's piano, with ... CD
