CD

Mindblowing stuff – the first album from Siji, and an immediate classic that grabbed us right away! Siji's been bumping around on various records for the past few years – lending his vocal talents to a number of great club tracks and singles – but this is his first full album, and it's a heck of a great debut! There's a righteousness to the album that's undeniable – a vocal style that's spacey, warm, and mellow – and which puts Siji somewhere in a trajectory of soul that runs from Stevie Wonder to Eric Roberson! The tunes have a bit of an influence from the New York Osunlade scene – no surprise, considering that Osunlade's offered Siji a lot of support over the years – but the songwriting itself is completely fresh, and crackles out with a personal energy that only seems to deepen as the set moves on. Incredible stuff, with a sound all its own – and titles that include "Sanctuary", "Watching You Watching Me", "Running Away", "God-Given", "Starting Over", "Feels Like", "Bittersweet", "I Believe", and "The Day Ahead".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, small cutout notch through spine.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Dreaming Wide Awake
Verve, 2005. Used
The second outing from vocalist Lizz Wright – done in the same sweetly folksy style as her debut, but in a way that seems to have even more of a focus overall. The backing on the set is especially nice – mostly just spare keyboards, bass, and drums, plus some great work on acoustic ... CD

Brother Sister
Delicious Vinyl, 1994. Used
The group's second real album, and one that never manages to totally capture the groove of the first – but which still has some pretty great writing and playing that set it apart from most of the soul of its generation! The cut "Dream On Dreamer" is one of those early 90s groovers ... CD

Wayna's as much a poet as she is a singer – and has these wonderfully visual lyrics that are a great contrast to some of the sweeter sounds of the Neo Soul generation! There's a simple, effective power to the set that doesn't really grab you at first listen – mostly because Wayna's ... CD

Excellent compilation that brings together 17 of the best early cuts by this legendary Acid Jazz combo. The BNH were one of the first – and certainly one of the best – groups to wave the flag of the acid jazz movement in the late 80s, and their perfect tight style of jazz funk has gone ... CD

A very sweet, and oft-overlooked session that has Herbie mixing a nice dose of lyricism into his usual soul jazz approach from the 60s! The sound's a bit farther-reaching than on some of Herbie's smaller group sessions – and the record features a sextet that includes Ron Carter, Mickey Roker ... CD
Blue Note, 1969. Used
A nice late Blue Note change from Herbie Hancock – a very different album than his previous sets for the label – in that it features a slightly larger group, and a sound that really points the way towards his directions in the 70s! There's a slightly ambitious feel to some of these ... CD
