Angular work from the Guillermo Gregorio Trio – a group with Gregorio on clarinet and tenor, Pandelis Karayorgis on piano, and Mat Maneri on electric violin! The sound here is somewhat obtuse at times – and reminds us a bit of Jimmy Giuffre's more "out" trio sides as the 60s progressed. But there's also a bit more freedom at points too – never too much, but enough to create a tension between composition and performance on a few of the better numbers. Titles include the originals "Slipped Fifths", "Study In Scarlet", "Woodchoppers Nightmare", and "Ana's Lullaby" – plus versions of "Lost Weekend", "Ghost Of A Chance", "Cottontop", and "These Foolish Things".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

A beautiful illustration of the deep talents of Anthony Ortega – a player who still sounds as creative and inventive this late in his career as he did way back in the 50s and 60s! The bulk of the CD features Ortega in two settings – one, a batch of studio duets with bassist Kash ... CD

Non Sequiturs
Hatology (Switzerland), 2011. Used
The title's almost a bit of a mystery here – as the music is so right on the money, so sense-making, that we can hardly hear a non-sequitur in the set – just these well-hewn, thoughtfully-played lines of sound coming from the twin tenors of David Liebman and Ellery Eskelin! The record's ... CD

We really love the tenor on this set from drummer Francesco Pennetta – a bold, soulful horn blown by Martin Jacobsen with a tone that's right on the money, and a gentle swing that works perfectly for the album's mix of old school modes! The quartet has a vibe that recalls classic Blue Note ... CD

Sweet funky jazz from Grover Washington – an early standout session from his classic years on Kudu Records, put together with hip arrangements from the mighty Bob James! The record's got the same spacious sense of grooving as James' first few for CTI – a style that's funky fusion, but ... CD

An early album as a leader from the great Roy Ayers – a set that captures the vibes man at a time when he'd been working on the west coast soul jazz scene, and was stepping into even greater fame in the group of Herbie Mann! Yet this set is definitely Roy's own – kind of an ... CD

Elvin Jones

Earth Jones
Quicksilver, 1982. Used
Soaring, righteous sounds from Elvin Jones – an early 80s session, but one that cooks as strongly as his most soulful albums from the 70s! In fact, there's almost a focus or tightness here that could sometimes be missing from other Jones albums – a really bold, sharp use of the group's ... CD
