One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album that his true talents really unfolded – sparkling with a depth of imagination and expression that marked him as one of the greatest artists in 60s American jazz! The group on the set is an all-star sextet – featuring Paul Chambers, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, and Freddie Hubbard – a disparate group of players who manage to come together with Nelson and find a unique voice that's rarely been duplicated again! The album features 6 fantastic compositions by Nelson, including "Stolen Moments", "Hoe Down", and "Yearnin". A fantastic record – and one that you can't go wrong with!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

John Coltrane

Africa/Brass Vols 1 & 2
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used
Quite a different album than usual for John Coltrane, but a classic one too – and a set that has the great one exploring his ideas in a set of longer tracks recorded with an expanded jazz orchestra! The format's hardly the mainstream big band of the time – as Coltrane's filled the ... CD

Gil Evans Orchestra

Into The Hot
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Used
The harder of the two Gil Evans albums on Impulse to find, and the best – really far-reaching material that has Evans coming into contact with some of the hippest jazz players of his generation! The record's got three incredible tracks written by Cecil Taylor – a very bold move for ... CD

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Used
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... CD

Michael White

Land Of Spirit & Light
Impulse, 1973. Used
Beautiful work from Michael White – one of the few musicians who can actually make us love the sound of the violin in jazz! White's working here in a style that's very much in line with some of the post-Coltrane spiritual soul jazz in Impulse in the early 70s – an approach that's free-t ... CD

Michael Brecker

Michael Brecker
Impulse, 1987. Used
A quintet session – features Jack Dejohnette on drums, Charlie Haden on bass, Kenny Kirkland on keys, Path Metheny on guitar, and Brecker on tenor sax. CD
Impulse, 1969. Used
One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the ... CD

Johnny Griffin

JG (Japanese pressing)
Argo/MCA (Japan), Late 50s. Used
Excellent early work by Johnny Griffin – a rare quartet session recorded in Chicago, with the same lineup (Junior Mance & Wilbur Ware) that appeared with on Ware's legendary Chicago Scene album! The tracks are straight-ahead quartet hardbop – short, but with great tenor work by ... CD

Roscoe Mitchell

Hey Donald
Delmark, 1994. Used
An album dedicated to Donald Myrick – a fellow Chicago saxophonist of Mitchell's, an early member of the AACM, and most famously, a key member of Earth Wind & Fire! The session has a more laidback feel than some of Roscoe's other work, and features a quartet with Jodie Christian on piano ... CD

Reuben Wilson

Set Us Free
Blue Note, 1971. Used
One of the most mindblowing sets ever from organist Reuben Wilson – his last session for Blue Note, and a much more ambitious record than before! The style here is more Cadet Records concept than the usual smaller combo groove of other Wilson sides for Blue Note – as Reuben's organ is ... CD

Randy Weston & Melba Liston

Volcano Blues
Verve/Gitanes, 1993. Used
Randy plays beautifully on a set of blues-inspired tracks arranged by Melba Liston – working with horn players that include Teddy Edwards, Benny Powell, Wallace Roney, and Hamiet Bluiett to come up with some really striking tunes that differ greatly from a lot of his other classic work! ... CD
Prestige/Jazz Heritage, 1957/1958. Used
Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums ... CD
