A gem of a record from vocalist Urszula Dudziak – the closest she ever came to doing a "straight" set of vocals, but still one that lives up to her unique style! The album was produced by Michal Urbaniak with a sweet electric vibe – never too smooth or overproduced, but with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Great late work by Lorez Alexandria – and one of the many worthwhile sides she cut for the Discovery label. The arrangements are by Jack Wilson and Charles Owens, and the music is by a small combo featuring the two of them, plus vibes, guitar, and rhythm. There's a nice moody version of ... Moody set of vocals recorded by this obscure Chicago singer. Lurlean got her start at the classy south side Club DeLisa, home to Sun Ra, and a host of other Chicago talents – but by the time of this recording, she'd moved downtown, and had become a classy smoky voiced singer with a good ... A classic set from singer Gloria Lynne – mature vocals that bridge the worlds of soul and jazz – all set to some beautiful modern arrangements by Melba Liston! The set's got a depth that goes a bit past some of Gloria's other records from the time – less of the pop-styled ... LP, Vinyl record album
Remarkable work from Jane Fielding – a little-known west coast singer from the 50s, one who cut a handful of great rare albums! This set's a stone winner all the way through – stripped down backing by a small combo that includes Lou Levy and Red Mitchell – and a set of songs that ... LP, Vinyl record album
The Hi Fi in the title might imply that there's a bit more going on here arrangement-wise than on some of Dinah's other albums – but the scoring by Hal Mooney is still pretty straight, in a sophisticated jazzy mode that works best with the vocals, and which never overwhelms the singing for ... If you're a fan of Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross, then you'll dig this set of tracks by the Lambert and Hendricks group with Yolanda Bavan, who replaced Annie Ross in the trio during the early 60's. Bavan swings like the best of them, and this live set's a nice batch of vocalese tracks with all the ... LP, Vinyl record album
An album recorded relatively early in the career of singer Nina Simone – but a set that already shows the very unique approach that would make her a legend by the time the 60s moved on! Even the very first tune is a stunner – a haunting reworking of the favorite "Just In Time" ... LP, Vinyl record album
An incredible late album from Bobby Darin – and a real treasure! The record was cut after Darin's mid 60s fascination with the work of Tim Hardin, most of which he re-recorded for Atlantic during that time – but it's got a similar style to the Hardin years, yet features some stunning ... Rare work from Billie Holiday – a compilation of 12 songs that were broadcast or performed live between 1949 and 1952 that were not previously released. The performances are good, even though a bit subdued, and the tracks include "My Man", "He's Funny That Way", "Billi ... LP, Vinyl record album
