Wes Montgomery — Incredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery ... CD 2.99

They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s Japanese pressing.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Wes Montgomery's first album as a leader – a relatively obscure set that has him playing in a trio with Indianapolis bandmates Mel Rhyne on organ and Paul Parker on drums – a mode that strongly recalls Montgomery's roots in the Indy scene at the time! If you only know the later, famous ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1965/1966. Used
An assortment of material that Wes Montgomery recorded for Verve before his too-early death – which the label then collected together as a surprisingly good posthumous release for Wes! There's a really great feel to the record – a mix of small combo and large group settings that offers ... CD
Hi Hat, 1965. Used
A fantastic lost slice of work from guitarist Wes Montgomery – a rare British broadcasting recording done in the year of 1965 – during a European tour that gave us some other material by Wes over the years! This collection features the guitar genius with an American group that features ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1965/1968. Used
A strange little record, but a great one too – a posthumous album that took older Wes Montgomery sides and souped them up a bit after his death! The core material here is quartet recordings done in 1965 – Montgomery's guitar in a hip group with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on ... CD
Resonance, Late 40s/1950s. Used 2 CDs
An incredible look at the very young Wes Montgomery – rare early recordings done before his breakthrough material for the Riverside label in the late 50s – but already showing Wes as one of the freshest talents of his generation on guitar! The bulk of the material features Montgomery ... CD

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was one of the first American players to record bossa nova tunes – but although his work with Stan Getz has always been well-documented, some of the titles under his own name can be quite hard to come by. This is one of the best ones that Charlie cut on his own – ... CD

Bobby Timmons

Born To Be Blue
Riverside/OJC, Early 60s. Used
One of Bobby Timmons' most obscure trio sessions from the early years – recorded at the tail end of the Riverside years, which is probably why the album disappeared so quickly! The set's in a similar format to some of Bobby's other records for Riverside – a trio set with either Sam ... CD

Philly Joe Jones

Drums Around The World
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used
A wonderfully experimental album from drummer Philly Joe Jones – and one that has just the right sort of "ethnic" feel to earn its "Around The World" title! Mostly, the ethnicity comes through in exotic reed work by Sahib Shihab, Herbie Mann, and Cannonball Adderley ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used
A sweet little album from Johnny – quite different than most of his other sessions at the time, as this one features a big band – a "Big Soul Band", as the title says – filled with some strong Chicago and soul jazz players, and featuring killer arrangements by the great ... CD

Mundell Lowe

Mundell Lowe Quartet
Riverside/OJC, 1955. Used
A great record from a great guitarist – one of Mundell Lowe's best small group sessions of the 50s, and a record with a wonderful sound overall! One of the key factors in the record's success is the presence of pianist Dick Hyman – who plays organ as well as piano here (plus celeste on ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1963. Used
A moodier session than usual for Griff – but in a nice way – and one that's cut with Buddy Montgomery on vibes and piano, and handled in a laidback soul jazz mode that's a refreshing change from some of his sharper hardbop sides! Highlights include the extended original "Slow ... CD
