Johnny Hodges & His Strings Play The Prettiest Gershwin

CD (Item 488387) Verve (Japan), 1958 — Condition: Used

Excellent work from Hodges – soloing beautifully on a set of standard Gershwin tunes, over wonderfully warm arrangements by Russ Garcia, in the best manner of the Verve "with strings" style. Hodges was a monster soloist in this kind of setting – hitting a sound and level of emotion that rivaled the Ben Webster sessions of the same nature on Verve. Titles include "Summertime", "Soon", "Somebody Loves Me", "But Not For Me", and a fantastic reading of "The Man I Love". (Out of print. Includes obi.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

You know, we've never been sure what they mean by "collates" in the title of this one – but we're guessing the title was chosen because of the way Johnny blows sheets and sheets of sweet sound together on alto sax! The recordings are in an Ellington mode, but taken to a small group ... CD

OK, so the title's a bit misleading – as Hodges never used to be "Duke", just played with him – but the record's a great one – really sharp set of standards from the mid 50s, played with a tightly moving focus! The small group settings includes Ellingtonians, plus the ... CD

A nice little 60s album by Johnny Hodges – one of the few post-Verve sessions that has him still playing in the hard swinging Ellingtonia small combo mode of the 50s! Players are all strong – and include Jimmy Jones, Cat Anderson, Ray Nance, Harry Carney, and Paul Gonsalves – and ... CD

Excellent 60s work by Stan Getz – tunes recorded in 1964, but not issued at the time, thanks to a flurry of bossa nova craziness! The pairing of Getz and Bill Evans is a wonderful one here – as both players are at their warmest, and working with a wonderful sense of tone throughout ... CD
