A seminal session from one of the greatest large groups ever! This one captures the Clarke-Boland ensemble at the peak of their creativity – swinging hard in that tight firey way that was virtually their trademark during the late 60s. The players are a top-shelf mix of European and American jazz legends – coming together without ego, without attitude, and having a hell of a time working through groundbreaking arrangements from leader Francy Boland. Soloists include Sahib Shihab, Tony Coe, Dusko Goykovich, Ronnie Scott, Jimmy Woode, and Benny Bailey – and the tracks are all short, but swing like a mofo, with plenty of solo action in the mix. Titles include "Love For Sale", "November Girl", "All Through The Night", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", and "Bei Dir War Es Immer So Schon".  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Great live material from the best years of this amazing ensemble that included some of the finest American and European players of the 60s! The band's at its best here – wailing away in a firey live setting, recorded with high quality by Europe 1 Radio in 1969. Players include Tony Coe, ... CD

Horst Jankowski

Jankowskeynotes
MPS (Germany), 1970. Used
Funky piano with a great MPS twist – and one of our favorite albums ever from Horst Jankowski! Horst is best known for his internationally successful easy listening work of the mid 60s, but this album's far far different than those recordings – a really groovy batch of tunes that ... CD

Oscar Peterson

Tracks
MPS/Jazz Heritage, 1969. Used
A solo sparkler from Oscar Peterson – recorded in a flurry of excellent late 60s recordings for MPS, and done in a warmly rhythmic mode that puts Peterson's solo work right up there in the ranks of Tatum and Garner! The production on the album is immaculate – done with a depth that ... CD

Oscar Peterson

Tristeza – On Piano
MPS, 1970. Used
A wonderful set of laidback tracks from Peterson – featuring a good mix of tunes from Brazilian sources, soundtracks, and a few nice 60s pop numbers! The group here features Sam Jones on bass and Bob Durham on drums – and while the album might have sparkled a bit more with some added ... CD

Eddie Lockjaw Davis/Johnny Griffin Quintet

Tough Tenors (aka Tough Tenors Again N Again)
MPS (Germany), 1970. Used
A smoking twin-tenor session for MPS – one that reunites the mighty talents of Johnny Griffin and Eddie Lockjaw Davis! The album was done as an offshoot of both players' work for the Clarke Boland Big Band at the time – and the set was not only produced by CBBB impresario Gigi Campi, ... CD

Oscar Peterson

Great Connection
MPS, 1971. Used
Oscar's great connection here is with the rhythm team of Louis Hayes on drums and Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass – both of whom bring in a nice degree of subtlety to the set, and make it one of Peterson's most gently-grooving albums for MPS! There's a warm, round quality to most of ... CD
MPS/Promising (Germany), 1971. Used Gatefold
A really tripped-out, messed-up session from Don Sugarcane Harris – recorded live in Berlin, but with a freaky experimental style that's much farther out than most of his studio work! The group here is totally hip – a combo of mad hippies that includes Robert Wyatt on drums, Wolfgang ... CD

Derf Reklaw

From The Nile
Ubiquity, 1998. Used
A wonderful set by Derk Reklaw – an overlooked Chicago musican from the 70s, and a player with credits that also include work in the legendary Pharoahs! The feel here is relatively in a spiritual 70s soul jazz mode – and Derf's working with ex-bandmates from the Chicago scene, plus a ... CD

Guillermo Gregorio Trio

Red Cube(d)
Hatology (Switzerland), 1998. Used
Angular work from the Guillermo Gregorio Trio – a group with Gregorio on clarinet and tenor, Pandelis Karayorgis on piano, and Mat Maneri on electric violin! The sound here is somewhat obtuse at times – and reminds us a bit of Jimmy Giuffre's more "out" trio sides as the 60s ... CD

Alice Coltrane

Journey In Satchidananda
Impulse, 1971. Used
Arguably the most classic Alice Coltrane album on Impulse – and a strong group effort that features some great work from Pharoah Sanders! Coltrane leads two different small combos on the record – both with Sanders on saxes, plus either Cecil McBee or Charlie Haden on bass, and Rashied ... CD
