Although this set was recorded early in the history of the Main Ingredient's career, it also compiles tracks from their strongest period – which means that nearly every track's a winner, and all are graced by smooth uptown soul arrangements by Bert DeCoteaux. Includes their seminal AM radio hit "Everybody Plays The Fool", plus "Black Seeds Keep On Growing", "Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling In Love)", "Make It With You", "I'm So Proud", "I'm Better Off Without You", "You've Got To Take It (If You Want It)", "Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)", "You've Been My Inspiration", and "No Tears (In The End)".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Out of print, BMG Direct pressing.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Main Ingredient

Quiet Storm
RCA, Early 70s. Used
A totally great set for fans of harmony soul – way better than just a greatest hits by the group! The Main Ingredient are probably best remembered for their bouncier pop tunes – but we've always loved the group best for their sweet mellow tunes, the kind of late nite harmony tracks ... CD

Main Ingredient

Afrodisiac
RCA/Koch, 1973. Used
Essential reissue of one of the best of the early Main Ingredient albums, and probably the one we sell for the most on vinyl when it shows up – which is almost never! The record's got a bunch of smooth sexy Stevie Wonder compositions – like "Superwoman", "Where Were You ... CD

Edna Wright

Oops! Here I Go Again
RCA/Reel Music, 1976. Used
A stunner of a solo set from Edna Wright – once the lead singer for Honey Cone, but almost even better on this smooth soul masterpiece from the 70s! The album's got an immediately recognizeable moment in the leadoff cut "Oops Here I Go" – sampled famously by De La Soul and ... CD

Five Star

Luxury Of Life
RCA/Tent (UK), 1985. Used
Nice mid 80s UK pop soul from Five Star – sweet family act that's kind of in the mode that's a bit of an unofficial British answer to the cheery family pop soul vibe of groups like DeBarge and New Edition at the time – and a sweet one! Lean, lightly thumping synth soul backdrops and ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1982. Used
Tavares chill things out nicely, definitely heading for the "new directions" in the title, and going for more of a mellow sound that was clearly going to help them reach new audiences in the post-disco years. The harmonies are as great as they always were in the early days, taking a ... CD

Sam Cooke

Night Beat
RCA/Abkco, 1963. Used
Wonderful mellow work from Sam Cooke – and a set that's recorded with a sound that's very much in keeping with the "night beat" that you might expect from the title! In fact, there's not so much a "beat" as a simple easy groove – a gentle sort of "night" ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1970. Used
The beginning of an amazing run on RCA for vocalist Jon Lucien – working here in a sublime blend of styles that's way beyond simple soul or standard jazz! Lucien's got a sound that's unlike anything we can think of – apart from the countless imitators who've tried for his style in ... CD

Touch You There
RCA, 1992. Used
... CD
RCA/BMG, Late 70s-Mid 80s. Used
A solid overview of RCA material from Evelyn Champagne King – from the disco era hits, catchy club soul, and synth soaked 80s grooves! Evelyn's sound is usually upbeat and catchy, but she's does her thing and more measured and and smoothed out soul numbers, and bass & synth grooves in ... CD
RCA/FTG, 1978. Used
One of the few 70s albums from the wonderful Major Harris as a solo act – and a lesser-known set that's a great follow up to the Major's previous records for Atlantic! The vibe here is a bit less Philly, but still in that mellow grooving style that works so well for Harris' vocals – a ... CD

Greg Perry

Smokin'
RCA/Reel Music, 1977. Used
A great little album of smooth soul cuts from Greg Perry – an extremely talented arranger, producer, and songwriter whose credits includes work in soul, pop, and country – appearing here in one of the few sessions he ever cut under his own name! There's a bit of a southern soul feel ... CD
