Although the free funky soul combo Medeski, Martin, & Wood are best known for their Hammond organ grooves – this tasty live set catches them in a slightly different vein, with all acoustic instruments in the band, including piano, bass, melodica, and mbira! The sound is different than usual – with touches of Tristano and Andrew Hill – but still very much in the strong spirit of the group – and the set's got some very nice long tracks, like "Afrique", "Your Lady", "Rise Up", and "Thaw". And if you've ever seen these guys live, you know that they can really kick it right – and open up to go way, way, out!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Ryko/Gramavision, 1993. Used
The first album by this enigmatic jazz funk trio from New York. Medeski's funky keyboards are firmly in place, and the group's got the usual tight rhythm groove, but the lineup's also expanded with some additional horn players, and some guest guitar by Mark Ribot. The album includes a great ... CD

A long-overdue reissue of the three Blue Note albums recorded by tenor sax giant Don Wilkerson! Wilkerson's one of the lesser-known artists to record for the label – a deep-throated Texas tenorman with a style that's a bit more R&B influenced than other Blue Note artists. The label took ... CD

Up At Minton's Vol 2
Blue Note (Japan), 1961. Used
A fantastic early record from tenor giant Stanley Turrentine – a set that's completely hard-hitting, and which has a very different vibe than the sweeter sets he'd cut later in the 70s! Instead, this record is pure hardbop all the way through – with Turrentine matching labelmate Hank ... CD
