Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Art Farmer

Soul Eyes
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1992. Used
Never-failing genius from Art Farmer – recording here in his later years, and working in that long and open-ended mode we love so much! There's few trumpeters who could make a record like this work – but Farmer's got a tremendous ability to stretch out on longer tunes with well-crafted ... CD

Dollar Brand

Children Of Africa
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1976. Used
Trio material – featuring Brand with Cecil McBee on bass and the great Roy Brooks on drums. The album's pretty laidback, but in a mellow spiritual mode that suits all players well. Brand plays soprano sax on the track "Ishmael", playing over his own piano lines – and other ... CD
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1979. Used
Galper always has a way with the piano (acoustic here) that lends itself to warm, blocky chords – perfect for our post hip hop-influenced ears, not as complicated as other jazz pianists, but filled with just the right amount of space and soul. The set was recorded live, with horns by the ... CD

Masahiko Sato, Peter Warren & Pierre Favre

Trinity
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1971. Used
Masahiko Sato on piano, Peter Warren on bass & Pierre Favre on drums. CD

Walter Norris & George Mraz

Drifting
Enja/Solid (Japan), 1974. Used
The title's an appropriate one – as the record drifts a bit lazily from track to track. The energy never really picks up, and but it's got a nice laid back, spacious approach, settling comfortably into its destiny as a set of piano/bass duets. Titles include "Space Maker", "No ... CD

Aki Takase & David Murray

Blue Monk
Enja (Germany), 1991. Used
One of the most striking albums we've ever heard from pianist Aki Takase – in large part because of some great work from David Murray on tenor sax – and some especially nice bass clarinet! The album's from a moment when it seemed as if duo modes were some of the best for Murray – ... CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. Used
Beautiful solo piano from Mike Nock – and a record that grabs us a lot more than we would have expected! Nock's a player who's had so many different great moments, in so many different settings, it's almost easy to overlook a more subtle record like this – yet the album's got a sense ... CD

Elvin Jones

In Europe
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1991. Used
An impressively spiritual set from Elvin Jones – recorded in Europe with some great accompaniment from reedmen Sonny Fortune and Ravil Coltrane! Both Fortune and Coltrane play in a mode that's clearly inspired by the latter's father – freely opening up with the angular and searching ... CD

Boillat Therace Quintet

Best Selection
KS Music (France), 1970s. Used
Wonderful stuff! Jean Francois Boillat plays Fender Rhodes, Raymond Therace plays tenor sax and flute – and the pair groove mightily together on this set of recordings from the 70s! The tracks have a style that mixes soul bop with jazz funk – easily grooving in a CTI-ish mode, with ... CD

John Coltrane

Love Supreme
Impulse/GRP, 1964. Used
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for ... CD
