LP, Vinyl record album

Pure genius from Oscar Peterson – one of his finest moments ever! The record is very different than most of Oscar's over-recorded trio format ones – and features Claus Ogerman crafting some impeccable backings of lofty strings and compressed horns, creating a pillow of air that takes Oscar's piano to the sky and beyond, floating into realms never dreamed of on other LPs! The set sparkles with a strident MPS easy groove – completely sublime, with a perfectness that we'd ascribe to a rare few albums, such as the similar-grooving Jobim album Wave, also helped out tremendously by Ogerman. Titles include "Dreamsville", "Sally's Tomato", "Sunny", "Wave", "Wandering", and "Ode To Billy Joe". (US pressing.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Verve, 1959. Very Good+
One of the first Oscar Peterson albums to ever feature "soul" in the title – added, no doubt, as a way of keeping up with Ray Bryant and other pianists making their name in the growing soul jazz field at the time! There's a groove here that's a bit harder than usual for Peterson on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1959. Very Good
Cole Porter's tunes are great enough on their own, but Oscar really opens them up on this set – picking up the inherent rhythms in the numbers and really working them over – in a way that makes the outing one of the most lively in Peterson's songbook series for Verve! Oscar's fluid ... LP, Vinyl record album
Albert Mangelsdorff & His Friends
MPS (Germany), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
German trombonist Albert Manglesdorff goes toe-to-toe with an amazing line-up of avant garde mainstays in duet settings for this MPS classic – including Don Cherry, Elvin Jones, Karl Berger, Attila Zoller, Lee Konitz, and Wolfgang Dauner! The format is simple; each of the seven tracks was ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of the more obscure albums that Eugen Cicero cut for the MPS label – still in the jazz-meets-classical vein of the rest, but featuring work by Franz Liszt, which maybe gives the whole thing a more fluid groove! The trio is Cicero's fantastic group with Charly Antolini on drums and Peter ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cup Full Of Dreams
MPS, 1973. Very Good+
One of our favorite albums by Don Sugarcane Harris – largely because it's got more of a jazz component than some of the others! Piano For Nuria
MPS, 1968. Near Mint-
A great pianist and a great rhythm section – two factors that make this one of the best albums ever from Spanish pianist Tete Montoliu! The session's got a tightness that some of Tete's other records are missing – a style that still allows him to display his free command of the keys, ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1975. Very Good+
One of George Duke's best albums for the MPS label – and a set that has a sound that's a little bit more soul than before! The album uses a fair bit of vocals alongside Duke's funky keyboards – but in a way that's not nearly as smooth as some of his albums for Epic, and which still ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+
A really great later Blue Note session from Stanley Turrentine – a small combo set that's almost a return to the format of earlier years! Never Let Me Go
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
Sweet and soulful early work from Stanley Turrentine – one of the few albums he recorded in the early 60s with wife Shirley Scott – then one of the greatest female organ players in the business! Mingus Dynasty
Columbia, 1960. Very Good-
A late 50s classic by the great Charles Mingus – his follow-up to the seminal Mingus Ah-Um, and a set that's got a very similar flavor!
