Russia Goes Jazz

LP (Item 48258) United Artists, 1964 — Condition: Sealed
A great little record – one that keeps up the high standards set by Teddy Charles' earlier work! The set has a bit of a goofy gimmick – in that it takes work by Russian composers (Stravinsky, Korsakoff, Borodin), and makes it swing with a jazzy groove. But because Charles is working here with "the all stars" – a group of players that includes Jimmy Giuffre, Jim Hall, Howard McGhee, Zoot Sims, and Jerome Richardson – he's got more than enough talent to make the whole thing work wonderfully. The album reminds us a lot of some of Richardson's work for United Artists from the 60s – with a slightly goofy edge, but incredible playing throughout, and a good commitment to swinging hard. Titles include "Borodin Bossa Nova", "Lullaby Of The Firebird", "Scherezade Blue", "Dance Arabe", "Etude", and "Love For Three Oranges March".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Basie Meets Bond
United Artists, Late 60s. Very Good+
An excellent gimmick from the United Artists label – a way of mixing their strong run of 60s soundtrack hits with the world of jazz – thanks to Count Basie and his group taking on a whole host of themes from the successful James Bond films! A rare Latin outing from trumpeter Art Farmer – one that has him working with the mighty Cuban arranger Chico O'Farrill! The grooves here are hardly "Aztec", as Chico brings a hip postwar vibe to the session – a blend of American jazz and Latin rhythms that's totally great, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Rae's Afro Jazz Septet

Herbie Mann's African Suite
United Artists, 1962. Sealed
A confusing title, but a wonderful little record! The album's as much a Herbie Mann Latin session as it is a record by Johnny Rae – which is probably why the album's titled as such – and the group on the set features Rae on vibes, Herbie on flute, Jack Six on bass, Philly Joe Jones on ... Blue Note/United Artists, Early 50s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A strange 2LP set – put together in 1971, with a cover and a gatefold format that makes it look like current electric Miles on Columbia, but a track list that features Miles early 50s recordings for Blue Note! The tracks were all recorded by Rudy Van Gelder – and the sessions feature ... LP, Vinyl record album

This is the small combo recording of tracks from the legendary jazz score to I Want To Live! Here Comes The Judge
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good+
A great lost album from Eddie! Jack McDuff

Honeydripper
Prestige, 1961. Very Good+
One of the records that put a young Brother Jack McDuff on the map – and a perfect example of the rougher R&B roots that first emerged in his early work on the Hammond! The session's got a much more down-n-dirty feel than some of McDuff's tighter 60s quartet work – and offers a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sketches Of Spain

A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects!
