A bold slice of work from the Daptone musical universe – a hip project that features work from members of The Dap Kings, El Michels Affair, Budos Band, and Antibalas – all put together with a range of sounds that really show the full spectrum of their styles! The groove's quite unique – even for the ultra-cool Daptone scene – as Menahan Street Band bring in bits of dub, funk, Latin, and Afro-styled sounds to their music – often working with a sense of spareness that seems influenced by 70s Ethiopia, but which comes off with a heavier Wu-inspired sound! There's no vocals at all – just really raw, stark instrumental bits – played on vibes, organ, tenor, flute, piano, trumpet, and some kickass percussion – produced with just the right sort of grit to make all tunes sound great. Titles include "Tired Of Fighting", "Home Again", "Montego Sunset", "The Traitor", "The Contendor", "Birds", "Esma", and "Going The Distance".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Al Supersonic & The Teenagers

It's Alright
Unique (Germany), 2013. Used
Al Supersonic has a mighty nice vocal approach on this retro-soul set – a style that's a bit looser and maybe more personal than some other singers in recent years – a quality that gives the the whole thing a pretty sweet edge! Al's a bit less "perfect" than some of the deep ... CD

Heliocentrics

Infinity Of Now
Madlib Invazion, 2020. Used
A fantastic mix of heady sounds and heavy funk from The Heliocentrics – and a record that continues the vibe of their previous set – in which the team of Malcolm Catto and Jake Ferguson were joined by the lovely vocals of Barbora Patkova! Patkova's presence is just what the group needs ... CD

Golden Dawn Arkestra

Darkness Falls On The End Of Time
Golden Dawn Arkestra, 2019. Used
A set that nicely takes Golden Dawn Arkestra back to their roots – with music that's warmly organic, spiritually evocative, and pretty darn funky all the way through – all with a unique quality that definitely marks the group's own territory! The ensemble almost move as if in an ... CD

Osaka Monaurail

Live In Spain (CD & DVD)
P-Vine (Japan), 2009. Used CD & DVD
Japan's grooviest combo – hitting hard in a special European set! Given the amount of mod rhythms coming from Spain these days, it's no surprise that Osaka Monaurail finds a very enthusiastic audience to work with – a crowd that's clearly going wild for the group's mix of 60s soul and ... CD

Galactic

Coolin' Off
Fog City/Capricorn, 1996. Used
Choppy New Orleans styled funk in the tradition of the Meters, and recorded with a lot of fidelity to the original sound. Not as amazing as the original, natch, but still surprisingly funky with a good earthy sound to it. CD

Galactic

Ruckus
Sanctuary, 2003. Used
Galactic get some heavy production from Dan The Automator – really chunking up their groove with lots of bass on the bottom and plenty of low-end sounds! The approach isn't really hip hop, but it does give the group's homegrown funk approach a sound that fits more closely next to modern ... CD

Connie Price & The Keystones

Wildflowers
Now Again, 2004. Used
A damn funky little album – and one of the best new records on Stones Throw in years! Connie Price & The Keystones are a modern group – but one who's steeped in all the older messed-up funky styles of their Stones Throw labelmates. There's a wonderfully tripped-out sound to their ... CD

Capiozzo & Mecco

Whisky A Go Go
Irma/Suonaphone (Italy), 2003. Used
A great set of mod grooves – as lively and propelling as The Whisky A Go Go was back in the 60s! The group's a duo based around Hammond organ and drums – but features guest performances on sax, guitar, trumpet, and the occasional vocal – all players joining in in a loose and ... CD
Greyboy, 1996. Used
An obscure bit of jazzy funk from the Swiss scene – the only album we've ever seen from Grandmother's Funck – on Greyboy Records! The album was recorded in Switzerland in '96, and there's timeless sound and a laidback approach of funk – with soul jazz awareness that we don't ... CD

Charlie Hunter

Charlie Hunter
EMI, 2000. Used
Hunter's getting a lot more sophisticated in his style, and is moving past the heavy funky sound of early days – to a mix of soulful styles that opens him up a lot more. This sextet session features drummer Leon Parker, who always works well with Hunter – plus tenorist Peter Apfelbaum, ... CD

Dele Sosimi

Identity
Helico (UK), 2008. Used
Killer work from one of the hippest artists on the contemporary Afro Funk scene – Dele Sosimi, who really makes the set sparkle on both vocals and keyboards! There's a groove here that's directly descended from Fela and Tony Allen, but which also has a few of its own elements as well – ... CD
