One of the hippest groups going in the deep funk underground – a combo who play way more than just conventional funk – and who manage to embrace a whole host of classic influences at once! Echoes of older Latin, African, and soundtrack-styled grooves sift together beautifully in this second album from The Budos Band – all in an approach that's totally unified, and which borrows the best elements from other modes to create a whole new Budos-styled sound! The album's all instrumental, but it's far more evocative than most vocal funk sessions we can think of – and the group's horns are tighter than ever, with a slightly exotic feel that creates some real otherworldly moments. Titles include "Ride Or Die", "Budos Rising", "Chicago Falcon", "King Cobra", "Origin Of Man", "Deep In The Sand", "My Girl", and "Mas O Menos".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Budos Band

Budos Band
Daptone, 2005. Used
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound ... CD

Brownout

Oozy
Nat Geo, 2012. Used
Massively heavy funk from Brownout – and a set that may well be their greatest so far! We weren't sure what to expect when the group hit the Nat Geo label – but honestly, they seem like they're even rawer and rootsier than before – really serving up a brilliant blend of funk and ... CD

James Taylor Quartet

Mission Impossible
Acid Jazz (UK), Early 90s. Used
Early work by the James Taylor Quartet – one of the group's first hard-hitting Hammond-driven albums, and a killer batch of retro funky tunes with a 60s R&B instrumental feel! James is really wailing on the Hammond on this one – blowing out some hip solos that romp with a mod late ... CD

Piano Overlord (Prefuse 73)

Singles Collection 03 to 05
Money Studies, Early/Mid 2000s. Used
The most uncategorizable grooves in the canon of Guillermo Scott Herren – his Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and otherwise keys-and-drums centered Piano Overlord guise – and a collection of rare vinyl singles cut from 03-05! Maestro Scott wrote, plays, and produced all the tracks – done with ... CD

Medeski, Martin & Wood

Friday Afternoon In The Universe
Ryko/Gramavision, 1995. Used
The second Gramavision album by MM&W, and a batch of grooves that shows them opening up their style a lot more than on their first one. There's equal parts of Larry Young and Jimmy McGriff mixed into the organ here, and the rhythm, while tight, is also got a nice open-ended feel. Titles ... CD
