❔

A nice little album that features some of Eddie Bert's best work as a leader – a set with some sharp modern tones and a very cool feel overall! The outing's a strong small combo one – with Bert in lead on trombone, plus tenor by Dave Schildkraut, guitar by Barry Gailbraith, piano by Hank Jones, and drums by Osie Johnson. Tracks are more open than you'd expect – with lots of great blowing by Bert in that dark moody mode he worked on with Mingus. Schildkraut's sax is very nice, too – and tracks include "Blue Beetle Original", "Father Time", "Cool School Days", "Home Cookin", and "Speedster".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Yellow label pressing with deep groove. Cover has some wear with splitting.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

One of the greatest Bobby Hutcherson albums for Blue Note – a classic session recorded in quartet form, with a style that seems to set a whole new standard for the vibes in modern jazz! Yusef Lateef

A Flat, G Flat, & C
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Haunting set of stripped down tracks by the brilliant Yusef Lateef, who not only plays his usual assortment of reeds here – tenor, alto, flute, and oboe – but also lays down a bit of theremin! He's accompanied by Hugh Lawson on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Hancock

Maiden Voyage
Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
A brilliant album – and real turning point for Herbie Hancock! After first coming onto the scene as the soul jazz hero between Blue Note funky classics like "Watermelon Man" or "Blind Man, Blind Man" – Herbie emerges here as a concerned modernist with a strand of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wilton Felder

Bullitt
World Pacific, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Fantabuloso! Crusader Wilton Felder lays down a whole batch of groovy tracks, including the theme from the movie Bullitt. Done It Again
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very very very groovy stuff by this masterful jazz vibist, recorded with a sort of late 60s swingin' feel – but still very much in the pocket and warm as a summer breeze! One of our favorite all-time records, and a real lost album on Blue Note! The second album by The Freedom Sounds – a very cool west coast soul jazz collective, headed by Wayne Henderson, and featuring a great mix of jazz, soul, and Latin rhythms! One of the few albums ever recorded as a leader by this great Chicago tenor player who's been making the scene in the city for over 40 years. Milestone, 1972. Near Mint-
One of Johnny Lytle's most righteous albums ever – a soaring, spacious set that's almost to Lytle's career what Gears was to Johnny Hammond's! Of course, Lytle's groove here is different – no Mizell production, and a mellower feel overall – but the unbridled space of 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album
