❔
A killer live set from the great Gene Harris – one that was recorded right during that stretch when his Three Sounds combo was really starting to get funky! The album's maybe years ahead of its time – as Blue Note didn't issue it back in the day, and only let it out of the vaults in the 90s – and the whole thing is a really revelatory album that has these long tracks really stretching out, in a way that's different than most of the Three Sounds albums from the 60s, and even some of their work with larger arrangements at the time! Later hero of the Black Jazz label Henry Franklin is on bass, and the great Carl Burnett is on drums – and the set features nice takes on the Monk Higgins tunes "Baby Man", "Funky Pullett", and "Sittin Duck" – plus gene's own "I'm Still Sad", and a groovy take on "Love For Sale".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

John Scofield & Pat Metheny

I Can See Your House From Here
Blue Note, 1994. Used
A tremendous pairing of guitarists – both musicians who first helped change the sound of the instrument in jazz during the 70s, and who somehow come together here at a level that not only brings out the best in both, but also seems to evolve the music too! Scofield and Metheny are masters of ... CD

Kenny Dorham

Trompeta Toccata
Blue Note, 1964. Used
A wonderfully free-thinking set by Kenny Dorham – and a record that really breaks from his earlier work! The album's not exactly experimental, but it features longer tracks with a looser approach than some of Dorham's sweeter shorter work – more in a rhythmically progressive mode that ... CD

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

At The Cafe Bohemia Vol 1 (Non RVG remaster edition)
Blue Note, 1955. Used
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group was less of an Art Blakey project, and more of an all-around affair – as you might guess from a lineup that also includes Horace Silver on piano, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass! The ... CD

Jimmy Smith

Prayer Meetin'
Blue Note, Early 60s. Used
A classic Blue Note meeting of two of the label's top talents in the early 60s – Hammond hero Jimmy Smith, and the up-and-rising Stanley Turrentine on tenor! Turrentine's simply great at this point – playing with a raspy edge on the bottom of his tone, sounding dark and mysterious ... CD

John Coltrane

Coltrane Time
Blue Note, 1958. Used
A legendary album from a legendary moment in jazz – and one that's got a very unique lineup, given that the young tenor genius John Coltrane meets up here with the brilliant piano of Cecil Taylor! The pair were both very influential in the farther reaches of jazz, yet in very different ways ... CD

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

At The Cafe Bohemia Volume 3
Blue Note (Japan), 1955. Used
Japanese-only album – a rare "part 3" to the Cafe Bohemia session – originally only issued on 2 volumes by Blue Note in the US, with a third volume presented here to feature rare tracks not issued at the time (some of which have later come out on CD.) A classic early set ... CD
Blue Note (Italy), 1960s. Used 11 CDs
An incredible run of music from the legendary Wayne Shorter – 11 full albums for Blue Note Records, each presented here in a tiny LP-styled sleeve! Shorter on Blue Note is the stuff of legend – already a stellar leader on his first three records for the label – Night Dreamer, ... CD
Blue Note, 1967. Used
As pure a distillation of McCoy Tyner's lyrical vision as one could ever hope for – a brilliant early standout session for the pianist as a leader! McCoy is backed up here by the energetic drumming of Elvin Jones – with whom he shares a natural empathy from their many years together ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used
One of the greatest albums ever by pianist Kenny Drew – a record that's as noteworthy for the contributions of the sidemen as it is for the efforts of the leader! Drew's a player who often worked mostly in trio formats – but here, he's hitting hard with a righteous Blue Note power ... CD

Grant Green

Talkin' About
Blue Note, 1964. Used
A real standout in the career of guitarist Grant Green – and that's really saying a lot, as every one of his albums is pretty darn special! The set's a trio date, but it's very different than the mode that Grant was using just a few years before – as it's an early pairing with organist ... CD

Clark Terry with Al Grey

Shades Of Blues
Challenge/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1994. Used
Late work from trumpeter Clark Terry, but the kind of record that really lives up to his long legacy of specially-shaped sounds from his instrument – matched here by superb work from Al Grey on trombone! Terry always has this great way of evoking a mouthy, gritty vibe from his horn, while ... CD

Louis Hayes

Exactly Right
Savant, 2023. Used
Louis Hayes is not just a great drummer, he's also a hell of a leader too – the kind that always seems to know how to pick the right players for a really special sort of sound – and create a vibe that really sets his records apart from the rest! That quality is definitely in place here ... CD
