Wonderful work from reedman Byard Lancaster – a set of live recordings that fill in his all-too-spare catalog from the early 70s! The material here was recorded both in Boston and St Paul – and the tunes have a really flowing, open sort of energy – a musical vision first inspired by John Coltrane, but pushed to the extremes by some of the more adventurous impulses of Lancaster's generation! Some moments are quietly contemplative, while others are bold, loud, and quite outside – and Byard's working here with a few different groups – all of which feature JR Mitchell on percussion, plus other players who include Sid Simmons on piano, Calvin Hill or Jerome Hunter on bass, and Lester Lumley on congas and percussion. The recording quality is great on all numbers, and this CD reissue adds in 2 bonus tracks to the original album – making for a total of 6 titles that include "Thought", "1324", "Last Summer", "War World", "Live At Macalester", and "World In Me". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
