Bittersweet Stories

LP (Item 4808) Curtom, 1974 — Condition: Sealed

A very strange release on Curtom – and we're not sure if we should call it a rock album or a soul album! Bobby Whiteside produced and arranged, and he's got sort of a 70's AM radio sound, with lots of pop harmonies, and catchy overproduced hooks. Titles include "Pen Of A Poet", "Vallery", "Easy With You", "Up On Living", "Piano Man", and "Footprints". For Curtom completists only, and definitely not another Superfly or Hutson II!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout notch.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impressions

First Impressions
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+
Hardly the first album by The Impressions, despite the title – but a wonderful batch of modern soul tunes that proves that the group could groove long after Curtis Mayfield was gone! Linda Clifford

Let Me Be Your Woman
Curtom/RSO, 1979. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Linda Clifford goes a bit over the top with this one – a lavish double-length set, of the sort that ended up bankrupting the Curtom label during the late 70s! Linda's very much in full-disco mode, singing to long clubby arrangements by Gil Askey that have more strings than before – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

Shaft
Enterprise, 1971. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A landmark album that hardly needs any introduction – as it's one of the most famous soundtracks, if not soul records, of the 70s! Isaac Hayes had already surprised music fans with the sophistication of his first few solo albums, which had been issued before this one – but with Shaft, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Power Of Love
Mercury, 1973. Very Good+
An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! Johnny Bristol produced the record, and he gives it a nice sweet 70s soul groove, similar to what he was using in his own work from the time. And typical of Jerry's albums from the early 70s, there's lots of nice original material, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Nazz

Nazz
SGC, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Genius early pop from Todd Rundgren & Nazz – work that's much more hard-rocking than some of Todd's later hits, but still with an undeniable songwriting brilliance! Kenny Rankin

Silver Morning
Warner, 1974. Near Mint-
Kenny Rankin at the height of his powers – working in an amazing blend of styles that includes bits of folk, jazz, and bossa – all wrapped together with a really warm feel overall!
