Impressions Of Charles Mingus

LP (Item 479426) PAJ, 1983 — Condition: Near Mint-
A loving tribute to the late Charles Mingus – one that has a very different sound than the Mingus classics you might remember, thanks to inventive arrangements from Teo Macero! All tunes are originals by Teo, and they've got that shimmering large group style he first perfected in the 50s – updated here with contemporary keyboards from Mike Nock or Macero, and set to shifting horn patterns that are full of tone and color. Players include Pepper Adams, John Stubblefield, and Dave Liebman on saxes, Jon Faddis and Ted Curson on trumpets, Dave Valentin on flute, and Ryo Kawasaki on guitar – and titles include "Monk's Funk", "Open C", "Two Bits & A Piece", "Chill", and "Goodbye Mr Good Bass".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(US pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Apart from the title's terrible pun on the Glenn Campbell hit of the mid 70s, this album's a real treat – a very soulful batch of smooth funky jazz tunes by The Crusaders, who by this point have fully emerged to claim the throne of the pop soul jazz genre they virtually invented. Once again, Cannonball Adderley proves the old jazz adage – it's not the song, but the singer – as he breathes fantastic new life here into a set of tunes from the musical Fiddler on the Roof! One of the smartest moves Phil Woods ever made was to move to Paris in 1968 and pick up a European rhythm section that featured George Gruntz, Henri Texier, and Daniel Humair. One of the great entries in Duke Ellington's "exotic" albums of the 60s – records that aren't exactly exotica by any stretch of the imagination, but which have musical themes that were inspired by the international travels of the Ellington band at the time! One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! One of the most free-wheeling Sonny Rollins albums of the 60s – an album that features some very long, extended tracks that really break out from some of the straighter moments of Sonny's mid-60s recordings!
