LP (Item 479124) Atlantic, 1977 — Condition: Very Good+
Eight Atlantic albums, and The Spinners are still going strong – sounding really wonderful here, thanks to Philly backings from the great Thom Bell! The album's not filled with hits, but that's a big part of its charm – as the group still sounds great, with smoother than smooth vocals – and the tunes move nicely between the soaring style the group discovered in Philly, and some of the mellower moments we've grown to like even more in their work over the years. Most players are Sigma Sound regulars, and titles include "I'm Tired Of Giving", "You Got The Love That I Need", "Painted Magic", "Easy Come Easy Go", "Love Is One Step Away", "Back In The Arms Of Love", and "Heaven On Earth".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes printed inner sleeve. Cover has some ring and edge wear, streaky blemish down the front, and is lightly bent at the spine and bottom right corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Average White Band

Warmer Communications
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+
In case you don't get the joke, the title's a play on the fact that Atlantic Records had just been acquired by Warner Communications – now fully a major label at the end of the 70s! That fact doesn't stop the album from being a good one, though – and AWB work here with Arif Mardin on a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-
Essential work by Aretha Franklin – one of her best albums for Atlantic in the late 60s, with tracks that virtually define the sound of hard soul during the late 60s! The album's filled with excellent material – featuring 2 killer tracks recorded in Muscle Shoals ("Do Right Woman, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stacy Lattisaw & Johnny Gill

Perfect Combination
Atlantic, 1984. Very Good+
A perfect combination of talents – Stacy Lattisaw and the young Johnny Gill, working together here in a set of tracks that offers an 80s update of earlier male/female soul duo modes! The production is definitely 80s, with lots of electric touches on both the rhythms and instrumentation ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1974. Sealed
Mellow sexy Aretha – with warm arrangements by Arif Mardin, and plenty of nice electric piano by the great Richard Tee. Includes a great version of Stevie Wonder's "I Love Every Little Thing About You", plus the tracks "You Move Me", "You'll Never Get To Heaven" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1959. Near Mint-
A Late Date from Ruth Brown – both in her 50s R&B years, and in the style of the work! The sound here isn't as rough and ready as on her famous singles – and the album's almost a jazz-based effort, done in a mellow, late nite mode with arrangements by Richard Wess – and a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1990s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold
A great overview of work from one of the key female singers who helped redefine the sound of soul in the 90s – an artist who was able to bring in plenty of influences from hip hop, and occasionally work with rappers too! And yes, that's pretty darn common stuff these days – but Brandy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don Covay & The Jefferson Lemon Blues Band

House Of Blue Lights
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
A cool step sideways for the great Don Covay – a set that still holds onto all the soul of his earlier work for Atlantic – but one that also has Don hitting a rootsier, bluesier mode too! The combo's definitely a blues group at their core, but apart from some harmonica and a bit more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Lady Soul
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
One of Aretha Franklin's undisputed classics from her late 60s run on Atlantic Records – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd – both of whom handle the mix of rawness and polish that made Aretha so great at the time! The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Spice Of Life
Mercury, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Friends Of Distinction

Whatever
RCA, 1970. Very Good+
Some nice little groovers from the enigmatic Friends Of Distinction – and a record recorded right after their big "Grazin In The Grass" fame.
