Beauty & Soul

LP (Item 4789) Image, Mid 70s — Condition: Sealed
Jimmy's a one-man soul machine here – singing, arranging, composing, and producing – all with a style that's got some nice sweet clubby touches! The style's in that mode that represented the shift in sound of the east coast indies as disco ascended in the mid 70s – but there's also a slightly broken quality to the work, in a way that reminds us of the best Miami soul of a few years back. Jimmy's voice is nice and fragile on the mellower numbers, and titles include "Get Down Happy People (parts 1 & 2)", "Main Feature", "I Need You Around", "Strong Lovin", and "I Beg To Borrow".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Sealed original pressing – with hype sticker! Cover has a cut corner.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Patrice Rushen

Pizzazz
Elektra, 1979. Very Good+
Brilliant work from Patrice Rushen – one of the records that not only helped break her out of the jazz funk ghetto, and right into the mainstream – but a set that also had a pretty profound influence on the progression of soul in the early 80s! Rushen sings as well as plays keyboards ... LP, Vinyl record album

Patrice Rushen

Patrice
Elektra, 1978. Very Good+
A sweeeeeet groover by Patrice Rushen – her first album for Elektra, and a stunning blend of funky jazz and soul! The record really has Patrice stepping out from her earlier years at Prestige – working in some surprisingly great vocals next to tight lines on Fender Rhodes, synth, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soulful Strings

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice! The great Richard Evans is still at the head of The Strings, and the album features solo work by Charles Stepney and Lennie Druss, in a cool breezy Chess/Cadet soul jazz kind of mode. The ... Chess/MCA, Late 60s. Very Good+
A collection of tracks recorded during the late 60s and early 70s – when the Dells were at their peak, recording at Cadet with arrangers and producers like Charles Stepney, Bobby Miller, and Don Davis. Titles include "Love Is Blue (I Can Sing A Rainbow)", "There Is", ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Porter

Sweat & Love
Enterprise, 1973. Very Good+
A nice batch of grooves that has David Porter singing in a fairly funky Stax style, and recording with backup by the group Ebony Web. The overall sound is a lot rootsier than the work that Isaac Hayes did after his partnership with Porter broke up – and the album's a great example of the way ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

Lady Soul
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
One of Aretha Franklin's undisputed classics from her late 60s run on Atlantic Records – a seminal session that furthered her deep soul agenda with key backings from Arif Mardin and Tom Dowd – both of whom handle the mix of rawness and polish that made Aretha so great at the time! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Rustic, 1974. Good
A much funkier album than usual – a record that takes the group past their warmer sounds of the late 60s, into territory that's a lot grittier overall! Sonny Charles is the real driving force here more than ever – producing, arranging, and bringing in lots of Fender Rhodes, clavinet, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Mid 60s. Very Good
Despite the title, this isn't really Aretha's greatest hits – as it includes no numbers from the Atlantic years – but it is a pretty good selection of Aretha's earlier work for Columbia, and features some real gems that should have been bigger hits than they were. Titles include "R ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prince

1999
Warner, 1982. Very Good+ 2LP
The record that forever put Prince on the map – a legendary set that took him from being an under-appreciated soul singer to a lasting pop music legend! Ohio Players

Mr Mean
Mercury, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
A lesser-known 70s album by The Ohio Players – tunes recorded for the soundtrack of the late blacksploitation film Mr Mean, but also very much in the tight funk format of the group's Mercury work! Tracks are nice and long overall – almost in a stretched-out take on the soundtrack mode, ... LP, Vinyl record album
