One of the rarest albums from Shelly Manne – and one of the best, too! The set's a soundtrack for an obscure film – and it features Shelly really breaking from the norm a bit – stretching out with his combo to reach towards some really evocative sounds! The group's a sextet, with edges as sharp as his combo on the Blackhawk date – players that include Joe Gordon on trumpet, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Victor Feldman on vibes, Russ Freeman on piano, and Monty Budwig on bass – all coming together with Shelly's drums, which really get some great space to take off at solo moments too. The scoring is great – understated and relaxed, with some shorter tunes that have the feel of a hip French jazz soundtrack of the late 50s, mixed with longer numbers that are even better.
