Kiss Mastermixes Vol 2

LP (Item 47847) Prelude, 1983 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP
A pretty cool 2LP set that brings the "mastermix" formula of New York's Kiss-FM to wax! The "mastermix" was a daily feature on the station – one that took 3 big tracks of the day, and blended them into one long tune. Mixers here are Shep Pettibone and Tony Humphries – and they're working with tracks that include "Do It To The Music" by Raw Silk, "Ride On The Rhythm" by Mahogany, "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" by Indeep, "Light Years Away" by Warp 9, "Walking On Sunshine" by Rocker's Revenge, "Keep On" by D-Train, "Ya Mama" by Wuf Ticket, and "Reach Up" by Toney Lee.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prelude, 1977. Very Good+
A very different album than usual for the Prelude label – not nearly as New York as some of their other albums, and produced by Stax Records legend David Porter in Memphis and Malaco! Also, the record has a lot less of a disco vibe than other Prelude albums – still a bit clubby in ... LP, Vinyl record album

Unlimited Touch

Yes We're Ready
Prelude, 1983. Very Good+
Pretty great stuff from Unlimited Touch – grooving here in a sound that's got a bit more of an 80s feel than their previous album, but which still works well for their dual-female vocal lead style. There's a bit of an electro "wheeet" in some of the tracks, but the vocals and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prelude, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP
A pretty wild batch of disco tunes – a suite of tracks loosely based around the Pinocchio theme, with vocals by the group Masquerade and arrangements by Boris Midney! The project's definitely got all the best Midney hallmarks in place – especially his penchant for longer tracks with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Touch Of Class

I'm In Heaven
Midland, 1976. Near Mint-
A killer little soul group who recorded with John "Monster" Davis in the mid 70s – really soaring with a groove that rivals some of their bigger contemporaries on the east coast group scene! Touch Of Class sing in a style that's sometimes fragile, but often more suited to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lakeside

Untouchables
Solar, 1983. Very Good+ Gatefold
The gangster image on the cover might be a tipoff to the sound here – as Lakeside help forge the roots of g-funk with their classic bass-heavy sound on the album! The record's great – every bit as funky as previous Lakeside work in all the right parts, but also showing a greater ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Jarreau

All Fly Home
Warner, 1978. Near Mint-
Classic fusiony jazzy soulful vocals from Al, with the bright kind of LA groove that brought Al into millions of living rooms during the 70s. Tracks include "I'm Home", "Brite & Sunny Babe", "Fly", "I Do", "Thinkin' About It Too", and his ... LP, Vinyl record album
Epic, 1976. Very Good+
A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roger (Roger Troutman)

Many Facets Of Roger
Warner, 1981. Near Mint-
There's many facets of Roger – and they're all pretty darn funky! From this vantage point, all we can think of is that Roger Troutman must have had some sort of crystal ball to see into the hip hop sampling future – either that, or he was busy cooking up west coast gangster funk drones ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isaac Hayes

To Be Continued
Enterprise, 1970. Very Good+
One of Isaac Hayes early 70s classics for Stax Records – a perfectly conceived masterpiece of baroque soul that builds and builds as the set goes on! Ike heads up the instrumentation on electric piano, vibes, and plenty of percussion – but he's also getting strong support here from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Aretha Franklin

You
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+
A great little record from Aretha – and on that always seems to get overlooked! The album's arranged by Gene Page, and it's got a sweet slightly funky electric side that opens up a whole new side of Aretha's style. Includes the nice groover "Mr DJ (5 For The DJ)", plus the cuts ... LP, Vinyl record album
Motown, 1960s. Very Good+
Despite the fame of their big hits – like "Reach Out I'll Be There", "I Can't Help Myself", "Baby I Need Your Loving", and "It's The Same Old Song", all of which are on this set, and which have been heard ad infinitum – the Four Tops are actually ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tribe Called Quest

Midnight Marauders
Jive, 1993. Near Mint-
A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material ...
