Trumpet Summit Meets Oscar Peterson Big 4

LP (Item 478227) Pablo, 1980 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
The trio of trumpeters meets the Oscar Peterson 4 – in a session of long tracks that have a liveish feel in the best Dizzy Gillespie mode! Most of the work here is in classic hardbop blowing style – with the trumpeters stating the head, then breaking out into well-voiced solos that outdo each other with inspiration – but there's also a bit of the lighter, airier quality that showed up on Dizzy's records of the generation too. The horns are mixed a bit too – so that some trumpets are muted, some are open, and Terry plays a bit of flugelhorn – and Peterson's quartet features Joe Pass on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Bobby Durham on drums. Titles include "Daahoud", "Chicken Wings", "Just Friends", and "The Champ".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some waviness & wear with light staining along the bottom 2 inches – but is less noticable on the front.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Soprano Sax
Pablo, 1976. Near Mint-
LP...$9.99 11.99
A rare treat from Zoot Sims – an album of soprano sax material, recorded in striking contrast to his more familiar tenor! The sound is oddly more traditional than usual – and unlike many other players in the 70s, Sims doesn't use the soprano in a Coltrane-inspired mode, but in a way ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pablo, 1975. Near Mint-
Way more than just a Gershwin Songbook sort of record – thanks to some tremendous blowing here by Zoot Sims, who's mellowed nicely with age, and comes up with a wonderful sound for the record! It may just be us, but there seems to be a lot more soul in Zoot's horn than ever before – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! Candid, 1960. Near Mint-
One of the most righteous albums that Max Roach ever cut – and a monumental jazz release from the heart of the Civil Rights era! On The Corner
Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too!
