✈
❔

The fantastic first album by one of the most unique funk groups of all time! A key part of the crumbling British colonial network that produced some excellent music in the postwar years, Cymande was comprised mostly of West Indians who'd emigrated to England in the 60s, eventually meeting up under a shared musical vision – a completely new blend of funk, dub, jazz, and soul that was unlike anything else that had been recorded before, save for the work of a few other Brit groups of a similar nature. This first album's one of their greatest – and it's a refreshing batch of tunes that mix together heavy basslines, laidback drumming, and a righteous soul vocal style that's got a bit of a stoner touch. The album includes the group's massive cut "The Message", a bit of a minor hit when it was released (and later sampled quite famously) – plus the funky classics "Dove", "Zion I", "Listen", "Bra", and "Rickshaw". Pick this up, and sample one of the 70's most unique funk groups!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with Sterling stamp. Cover has moderate wear with a three inch seam split along the top.)

Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, or have one outstanding flaw, such as a light residue, which could be difficult to clean.
  • May have marks on all parts, too many to qualify as Very Good-, or several deeper marks, but the record should still be ok for play without skips.
  • In general, this is a record that was played a fair amount, and handled without care. A typical example may be a record which has been heavily played by a DJ, and carries marks from slip cueing. Depending on the quality of the vinyl, may play with surface noise throughout.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Janus, 1970. Very Good
Mindblowing work from Minnie Riperton – her first solo album, cut at the end of the 60s, after a number of years of work with the group Rotary Connection. The album builds off the now famous sound of Rotary Connection – but takes it to the next level, with arch-baroque production by ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shawn Phillips

Spaced
A&M, 1977. Very Good
Wonderful! Shawn Phillips started his career as a shaggy folk rocker with a bit of a jazzy twinge – but this album collects odd bits and pieces that were left off of earlier albums, and works perfectly as a record that shows a whole new side of his genius! The album shows Phillips as a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Love Unlimited Orchestra

Rhapsody In White
20th Century, 1973. Very Good
A beautiful swirling instrumental LP that features the classic "Love's Theme", the cut that made Barry a multi-millionaire, and which firmly established his sophisticated orchestral soul style as one of the trademarks of the 70s! This is the ultimate in 70s soul class – from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. Very Good-
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

Edwin Starr

Hell Up In Harlem
Motown, 1974. Sealed
Despite what you think of Edwin Starr otherwise, he did a great job on this soundtrack, which is every bit as funky as any of Willie Hutch's work for other Motown scores! Larry Mizell and Dennis Coffey help out on the instrumentation – so you know the album's as funky as can be – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Average White Band

Person To Person
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Their classic double live set from the mid 70s, and as tight a batch of grooves as you'll find on their studio albums! In fact, this one might even be tighter, as it's got a good set of classic tracks performed live, with a sound that's a little bit more uptight and open than the studio ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta James

Etta James (1973)
Chess, 1973. Near Mint-
Heavy funk from the great Etta James – one of her standout classics from the later Chess years, done with a style that's completely different than her work of the 60s! The set was recorded in LA with a super-dope sound that's almost in a funky soundtrack mode – full horns, bits of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Rawls

You're Good For Me
Capitol, Late 60s. Near Mint-
One of the beautiful records from Lou's late 60's years at Capitol, and one of the ones he made with the great team of H.B. Barnum and David Axelrod. As usual, Barnum turns out some fantastically swinging soul arrangements – and Axelrod's procduction ensures that things are nice and tight, ... LP, Vinyl record album
20th Century, 1977. Very Good- Gatefold
Who cares about "someone you love"? We're just happy that Barry White's singing for us! The album's one of the maestro's biggest selling albums of the 70s, and for good reason – as the whole thing's a sexy symphony all the way through, filled with as many stepping rhythms as it is ... Barrabas

Watch Out
Atco, 1976. Near Mint-
One of Barrabas' best-selling records – and a mixture of club grooves and funky playing, recorded in New York with work by Herbie Mann, Michael Brecker, and Ray Gomez in addition to the group's usual mix of heavy percussion and guitar/keyboard riffing. The sound is a lot slicker than earlier ... LP, Vinyl record album

Geraldine Hunt

No Way
Prism, 1980. Near Mint-
Post-disco soul from Geraldine Hunt – with a sound that's definitely trying to recapture "soul" from a world that was becoming dominated by disco divas who had little creative control over the sound of their music. Geraldine co-wrote most of the tracks on the album, and she's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cal Tjader

Sona Libre
Verve, 1963. Very Good
Excellent Verve album that Cal recorded with the great Clare Fischer on organ and piano. Clare's organ work on here is stellar, and he's got this cool little spare sound that works very well with Cal's vibes. The set includes a great version of "Sally's Tomato", plus the cuts "Hip ...
