LP, Vinyl record album

Early magic from one of the greatest pop voices of the 60s – a singer that we'd rank right up there with Scott Walker for sheer godlike genius! Even in a simple setting like this, Jack shines brilliantly – taking familiar tunes from shows, and opening them up with a delivery that's straightforward, yet evocative – often touched with interesting rhythmic phrasing that prefaces a lot of the changes to come in male vocals during late years of 60s pop. Titles include "Luck Be A Lady", "I Love Paris", "A Lot Of Living To Do", "Shall We Dance", "People", and "I See Your Face Before Me". (Cover has a cutout hole, and shrinkwrap is open in one spot.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

There's Love
Kapp, 1965. Sealed
A great record from Jack Jones, with a bit of a Latin bounce at times – hints of bossa buried in the larger backings from Nelson Riddle – often carried off with a sweetly fluid groove! Jack's vocals are near-perfect – poised, but never stodgy – and with a focus that's also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Our Shining Hour
Verve, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
A brilliant album that follows on the trend that was begun by Sinatra and Tony Bennett – one that takes strong jazz backings from Count Basie to push a singer past the usual pop format! Sammy didn't always get backing this strong – and the album's got Quincy Jones handling the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Like Someone In Love
Verve, 1957. Very Good-
Titles include "Midnight Sun", "You're Blase", "Night Wind", "Hurry Home", "What's New", "Close Your Eyes", "More Than You Know", "There's A Lull In My Life", and "How Long Has This Been Going On". LP, Vinyl record album
At The Village Gate
Colpix, 1961. Very Good+
An album recorded relatively early in the career of singer Nina Simone – but a set that already shows the very unique approach that would make her a legend by the time the 60s moved on! Even the very first tune is a stunner – a haunting reworking of the favorite "Just In Time" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Kapp, 1953. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever recorded by Matt Dennis – a cool-voiced vocalist who was equally known as a songwriter! Matt's style here is nicely laidback – supper-club jazz, but with a nice hip twist – the kind of singer who could be playing a room with a gently swinging ease, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Lonely & Sentimental
Everest, Early 60s. Very Good
A classic set from singer Gloria Lynne – mature vocals that bridge the worlds of soul and jazz – all set to some beautiful modern arrangements by Melba Liston! The set's got a depth that goes a bit past some of Gloria's other records from the time – less of the pop-styled ... LP, Vinyl record album
Julie Is Her Name
Liberty, Late 50s. Good+
A landmark album in 50s vocal jazz – spare, moody, and evocative tunes from Julie London – sung in a stripped-down setting that few other singers would dare at the time! The sound of the set is as sexy as the cover – intimate, personal, and breathily sung in a mode that comes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Movin' Day
Janus, 1974. Very Good
Grady's most obscure album – and one that's got much more of a jazzy tip than his other ones. Richard Tee plays electric piano, and the band includes Billy Butler, George Coleman, and Ron Carter – all of whom do their best to keep things hip, and not fall into some of the schmaltzier ... Latin Pulse
Epic, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nancy sings some sweet Latin groovers in Spanish – backed by groovy 60s arrangements from Joe Sherman! The feel here isn't quite as driving as on her classic "Mas Que Nada" album – but it does have a similar style – sort of blending easy 60s vocals with swinging pop ... LP, Vinyl record album
This Is Sinatra!
Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good
This Is Sinatra indeed – a wonderful collection of singles, and a near-lost album to the shifting sands of time! The record wasn't one of Frank's "album concepts" for Capitol, and has since been dismantled in the catalog – but for many in the 50s, this was one of THE Sinatra ... LP, Vinyl record album
