Billy Preston right in the middle of a classic 70s run – hitting a trademark blend of soul, jazz, and other groovy influences – all with a sound that's very much his own, and which puts him in the same company as Sly Stone or Stevie Wonder! Preston's market was a bit more mainstream ... LP, Vinyl record album
Not an entirely new thing from Billy Preston, but still pretty great overall! The set's still got Billy working in a fair bit of the righteous rhythms of his previous sets – those church-inspired grooves that first got him noticed in the early 70s – but there's also a few different ... Billy Preston's first album on A&M Records – a surprisingly great home for his ever-evolving style! Billy give some big thanks in the notes to George Harrison, Bobby Womack, and Quincy Jones – all of whom he credits for bringing the album into being – although it's Quincy who ... Righteous churchy soul from Billy Preston – with all the cliches and flourishes that made him a hit with the kids back in the old days. George Harrison produced, and that aspect of the record is perhaps its strongest – as Preston come across in the heavy wall of sound mode used by The ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of the best albums ever by LTD – featuring some wonderful early vocals by Jeffery Osborne, and stellar production by the team of Larry and Fonce Mizell! The Mizell Brothers sound a lot different here than they do on their Blue Note work – more deeply soulful, with a sound that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
The second album from LTD – very much a funky soul record, with lots of heavy bass and strong boogie touches on the groove! The tracks are all pretty darn catchy, and mostly in a midtempo romping sort of mode – with great lead vocals from Jeffrey Osborne, sounding (nicely) rougher than ... LP, Vinyl record album
A wonderful album from Linda Lewis – certainly one of her best from the early days, and a completely captivating mixture of soul, jazz, and rock that sparkles like Minnie Riperton's best work from the time! The album's got a sweet LA sound – with Linda's great vocals up front in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
An all-star soundtrack to this comedy film from the 70s – starring Raquel Welch, Bill Cosby, and a very young Harvey Keitel! Most of the tracks on the set are from other A&M albums, but there's a few tunes that are original to the set – including the vocal track "No Love ... LP, Vinyl record album
Massively beautiful work from the great Donny Hathaway! After two studio albums that had firmly put him on the map as one of the 70s best soul talents, Atco had the genius to have Donny record this live album before very enthusiastic crowds in Hollywood and New York. The result is one of the best ... LP, Vinyl record album
One of Melvin's earliest – and best – albums of messed-up funky political soul. The arrangements have that usual quirky Van Peebles groove, with a sound that always feels like it's about to fall apart, but which always snaps right back into place at the last possible moment.
