Night Birds

LP, Vinyl record album

The cover of this one sports an image that's almost rockish – especially given that the "night birds" on the image are pterodactyls – but the sound is as smooth and jazzy as you'd expect from Shakatak at their best! The group were a leading light in 80s fusion, and with records like this it's easy hear why – thanks to well-played keyboards from Bill Sharpe – handled with a spaciously stepping groove that underscores the more soulful leanings of the group. There's a bit of vocals on the set, but the album's still mostly an instrumental affair – and titles include "Night Birds", "Easier Said Than Done", "Takin Off", "Light On My Life", "Bitch To The Boys", and "Streetwalkin". We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Polydor, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was ... LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1979. Very Good+
THE lasting classic from Gloria Gaynor – the record that contains her tremendous hit "I Will Survive", and a great batch of disco grooves overall! The album's got a simple, honest sort of approach, despite its release in an era of overblown dancefloor sets – and arranger ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mandrill
Polydor, 1970. Very Good- Gatefold
Mandrill's first album of funky Latin jazz and soul – a landmark in crossover styles that still sounds remarkably fresh today! Polydor, 1972. Very Good+
Raw power and righteous energy from James Brown – a set that still has all the best funk elements of his longer-form albums of the time, but which also packs an even stronger political message too! The vibe of the record is clear from the image on the cover – the most powerful since ... LP, Vinyl record album
Polydor, 1973. Very Good+
Second volume of this excellent early 70's compilation. It contains some of James' best funky singles from his late King and early Polydor years, and a record that features a lot of cuts that didn't necessarily show up on LP that easily. Honky Tonk Angel
Polydor, 1972. Very Good+
Forget the "honky tonk" in the title – because this girl knows how to groove! Ellen McIlwaine's got to be one of the most unique talents of the past 50 years – a skilled guitarist, and great singer – working in a blend of folk, jazz, and soul that lies somewhere between ... LP, Vinyl record album

Original Disco Man
Polydor, 1979. Very Good+
Forget the "disco" in the title, because the album's not really disco – or at least not in a way that any disco fan would agree to – just more of a dancefloor-oriented approach to the heavy funk that James had always been cutting in the 70s! Tracks are longer and more uptempo ... LP, Vinyl record album
Don't Let Go
Polydor, 1979. Very Good+
Wonderful later work from Isaac Hayes – a gem from his Polydor years that has a good mix of mellow cuts and more upbeat numbers! The record has 3 long "quiet storm" tracks that take off on Ike's earlier expanded ballad style (forged on tracks like "Walk On By") – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Step Into Our Life
