Sex & Material Possessions

LP (Item 475250) Pavillion/CBS, 1982 — Condition: Very Good+

The second set from this early 80s disco trio – a Tony Valor side project, served up with all the soaringly soulful lines we love in his work from the 70s! Fantasy features two male singers and one female – trading back vocals nicely over catchy rhythms that sparkle with plenty of soul – and a surprising amount of warm instrumentation, much more so for clubby projects like this from the time. A few cuts get a bit mellower – almost going for a crossover soul feel, but in a nice way – and titles include "Believe Me", "Hold On Tight", "So Easy To Say", "Too Hot For Love", and "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kokomo

Kokomo (1975)
CBS, 1975. Very Good+
Blue-eyed funk from Kokomo – and a record that's got a surprisingly funky feel, despite it's slightly trippy cover! The group mix warm vocals with tighter grooves on the bottom – almost an Average White Band sort of feel at times, but maybe a bit more crossover on the sweeter tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

O'Jays

TSOP/CBS, 1980. Near Mint-
We know what you're thinking: "These guys were best in the 70s." Young-Holt Unlimited

Oh Girl
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! Shawn Phillips

Spaced
A&M, 1977. Very Good
Wonderful! Shawn Phillips started his career as a shaggy folk rocker with a bit of a jazzy twinge – but this album collects odd bits and pieces that were left off of earlier albums, and works perfectly as a record that shows a whole new side of his genius! Roy Ayers

Vibrations
Polydor, 1976. Very Good+
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! Epic, 1974. Very Good+
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, ... Do The Funky Chicken
Stax, 1970. Very Good+
One of the best Rufus Thomas albums from the 70s – a key record from his comeback years, and one that has him trading in his older R&B mode for a harder, funkier Memphis groove!
