Music For Loving – Ben Webster With Strings

LP (Item 475154) Verve, Mid 50s — Condition: Very Good+
Wonderful stuff! Ben Webster blows soulful late night ballads over strings – a perfect combination! Backings are by Ralph Burns and Billy Strayhorn – both of whom can be trusted to keep things hip, using the strings to create mood, emotion, and tension, instead of a pillow to smother the sound of Webster's incredible tenor work. Titles include "All Too Soon", "Love Is Here To Stay", "It Happens To Be Me", "You're Mine You", "Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Sophisticated Lady" and "Love's Away".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

EmArcy, Early 50s. Very Good+
A rare Emarcy session as a leader from this tremendous tenorist – with some tracks that have Ben Webster in a small group with John Kirby on bass, Benny Carter on alto, and Maynard Ferguson on trumpet – and three more with larger arrangements from Johnny Richards! LP, Vinyl record album
Imperial/Affinity (UK), 1969. Near Mint-
A great late date from Ben Webster – one that has the tenorist working with a Dutch rhythm section that features Cees Slinger on piano, Jacques Schols on bass, and John Engels on drums – stretching out nicely on long tracks that include "Work Song", "The Preacher", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Circle, 1944. Very Good+
Great 40s material – with Hot Lips Page on trumpet! LP, Vinyl record album
Inner City, 1973. Very Good+

Verve, Mid 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
The stuff of legends, and one of the best sides that Webster cut for Verve in the 50s, this reissue adds a whole 'nother set of quartet sides, recorded with almost the same group, minus Herbn Ellis and replacing Stan Levey with Ed Thigpen. On the original LP the group's a quintet – with the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Astrud Gilberto

Getz Au Go Go
Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold
A beautiful dreamy album that's quite different from the classic Getz/Gilberto collaboration – but which also shares much of that set's lyrical beauty! This album was recorded live, in 1964, when Stan Getz was playing with his quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes – an incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa

Jazz Samba Encore!
Verve, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time ... LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy DeFranco

Closed Session
Verve, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Tracks include "My Blue Heaven", "S'Wonderful", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "After You've Gone". LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint-
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey approach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1955. Near Mint-
The album's way more than just a sense of "interpretations" – because with Bud Powell at the helm, everything here is remade anew! The album's possibly the most focused of Powell's mid 50s sides for Verve – George Duviver on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans

Trio '65
Verve, 1965. Very Good+ Gatefold
Fantastic Verve Records material from Bill Evans – a set that follows the no-nonsense trio style of his Riverside material, but which definitely shows the evolving Evans style of the 60s! The group here is a nicely mellow one – bassist Chuck Israels, whose sound is tremendous – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Evans with Jeremy Steig

What's New
Verve, 1969. Very Good-
One of Bill Evans' most beautiful albums from the time – and one that features the fantastic team of Jeremy Steig and Eddie Gomez, who were cutting some beautiful records for other labels at the time. Steig's flute later got very silly, but at this point, he's got a raw stripped-down sound ... LP, Vinyl record album
