Lonely Man

LP (Item 4751) Brunswick, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
Also available
Chi-Lites — Lonely Man (with bonus track) ... CD 16.99
One of the biggest records ever from The Chi-Lites – thanks to the "Oh Girl" title hit that's referenced on the cover! But apart from that ballad classic, the record's actually got a heck of a lot more to offer – some incredible harmony soul tracks that show that even during their hit years, The Chi-Lites were one of those groups who could still stay true to their roots – and still come up with amazing tunes again and again! Mainman Eugene Record is at the helm producing and writing most of the tunes on the set – and some of the best numbers have that little gentle groove that was the best Chi-soul contribution to the sound of the 70s – that lilt or bounce from the 60s, turned towards slightly more sophisticated modes for the new generation. Titles include "Being In Love", "Love Is", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "Living In the Footsteps Of Another Man", "Ain't Too Much Of Nothing", and "A Lonely Man" – and a cover of "Inner City Blues".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(In the "Oh Girl" cover, with light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chi-Lites

Happy Being Lonely
Mercury, 1976. Very Good+
Beautiful beautiful work from The Chi-Lites – and a record that we might even say tops the best of their late Brunswick book! Despite the move from that label to Mercury, the group have a sound here that's still wonderfully fragile and harmony-focused – especially on the mellower cuts, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Brunswick, Early 60s. Very Good+
You certainly ain't heard nothin, not until you hear this very strangely conceived set of Jackie doing a tribute to Al Jolson! We could condemn this, but we actually find it pretty fascinating, as it confirms the strange black following that Jolson had, even though you would've expected him to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Young-Holt Unlimited

Just A Melody
Brunswick, 1969. Near Mint-
One of a great run of grooves from the legendary team of bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt – a smoking batch of instrumentals done in the best Chicago soul style of the time! Young and Holt got their start in the early trio of Ramsey Lewis – but here, they've fully expanded to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie Wilson

Woman, A Lover, A Friend
Brunswick, Early 60s. Very Good
Dreamy work from Jackie – who's singing here over arrangements by Dick Jacobs that have a sweetly swaying romantic feel to them. There's still plenty of room for Jackie's great vocals to dip, turn, leap, and soar – and the album has him working in a dramatic mode that's quite striking, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jackie Wilson with Count Basie

Manufacturers Of Soul
Brunswick, 1968. Very Good+
A really wonderful collaboration between two very unlikely partners – and a great album that really stands out as some of the best work from both artists in the 60s! First Time Around
Brunswick, 1974. Sealed

A lost set of female soul tracks – recorded in the waning years of the Brunswick label, when they were really experimenting with some great obscure groups, most of whom got lost in the tax shuffles of the label's demise! Jimmy Ruffin

Groove Governor
SOUL, 1970. Very Good
One of those Motown treasures that would have been a runaway hit, were it issued on a label with less going on – but which somehow got lost amidst the shuffle of all the other Motor City greatness of the time! Don't let obscurity make you think that Jimmy Ruffin's not giving his best, though ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sam Cooke

Try A Little Love

Released shortly after Sam's death, this is a beautiful batch of ballad tracks to remember how sweet his voice was. The production's a bit pop, but Sam's singing is as heavenly as ever. Titles include "When A Boy Falls In Love", "Try A Little Love", "Bridge Of Tears" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maxine Weldon

Some Singin'
Monument, 1974. Very Good
Sophisticated country soul – almost to southern soul what Marlena Shaw's early 70s work was to northern soul.
