25th Day Of December

LP (Item 475017) Riverside, 1962 — Condition: Very Good
A vintage Holiday recording from The Staple Singers – a set recorded back in the group's earliest, rootsiest days! The sound here is quite spare – no surprise, given that the session was done by Riverside Records, at a time when the label was pushing the gospel-influenced quartet onto folk audiences of the 60s – but it's also that spare quality that gives the record a timeless feel that holds up nicely. Instrumentation is just a bit of guitar from Roebuck Staples and organ from Maceo Woods, plus some drums – and titles include "The Last Month Of The Year", "Holy Unto The Lord", "The Savior Is Born", "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", "There Was A Star", "Silent Night", "O Little Town Of Bethlehem", and "No Room At The Inn".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Brown

Grits & Soul
Smash, 1964. Very Good+
One of the grooviest of the James Brown instrumental albums on Smash Records from the 60s – a set that's overflowing with long original tracks, and less of the remakes that James did on some of the others! The James Brown band is in full effect – and Brown turns out some great Hammond ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dr John

Babylon
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Seminal work from Dr John – one of his key late 60s albums that set the world on fire at the time – and which still stand as some of the doctor's greatest achievements! The approach here is a fantastic abstraction of older New Orleans roots – not nearly as rigid as in some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Curtom, 1975. Very Good+
A great album by Curtis Mayfield – filled with some excellent lesser-known gems! There's No Place Like America was Curtis' scathing testament to the State Of The Union – and it's got a hip political tone that's right up there with the best of his early 70s songwriting – perhaps ... Smiley Lewis

No No
Imperial, Mid 1950s. Sealed
Great work from early New Orleans soul legend Smiley Lewis! Lewis recorded a lot of hip, soulful Crescent City R&B with producer Dave Barthlolmew, and is characterized here as the "bad luck singer" for his lack of a huge hit to push into the seminal status of some of his ...
