Frances Faye Sings Folk Songs

LP (Item 473306) Bethlehem, 1955 — Condition: Near Mint-
A surprisingly great set that features Francis Faye singing jazz renditions of older folk songs – one of the first such sessions of its type (the genre would become more popular a few years later), and done with an approach that has the songs all re-tuned for a 50s modern ear by Russ Garcia, who handled arrangements for the set. Howard Roberts plays a nicely raspy guitar at the bottom of some of the backings, giving them a slightly folksy flourish, but Garcia's mostly using a four-trombone frontline to push the jazz component of the tunes. Includes versions of "Frankie & Johnny", "Clementine", "Three Ravens", "Go Way From My Window", "St James Infirmary", "John Henry", and "Greensleeves".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Frances Faye

No Reservations
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
No Reservations is quite an unusual little set for the time – as it's a bit looser and less structured than most other vocal dates – very much in the spirit of Faye's famous performances in clubs, with a gritty, personal approach to the music that's really great. The orchestrations are ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1955. Near Mint-
One of the straighter sessions ever recorded by vocalist Bobby Troup – an intimate quartet side, with backing by Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Enevoldsen on bass, and Don Heath on drums. Bobby sings and plays piano – in that warm, laidback LA style that's made him one of our favorite ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint-
A great little live set from Mel Torme – and one that features the same jazzy style as his studio albums for the Bethlehem label from the 50s! Bethlehem, 1954. Very Good+
A great set of tracks that represent some of Chris Connor's first recordings as a solo act – a classic album originally issued as a 10" LP by the Bethlehem label! Complete George Gershwin Porgy & Bess
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good 3LP Box Set
One of our favorite recordings ever of George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess – done by Bethlehem Records in the mid 50s, and featuring nearly every one of the label's great talents at the time! The choice of the lead characters is a bit odd – as Mel Torme plays Porgy and Francis Faye ... LP, Vinyl record album

Finest Of Chris Connor
Bethlehem, Late 50s. Very Good+ 2LP
A tasty little 2LP set – one that collects the excellent late 50s vocal work cut for the Bethlehem label by Chris Connor! At the time, Chris had a sound that she virtually invented – icy vocals backed by small combo jazz, in a very spare and subtle setting – and the sound was, ... LP, Vinyl record album

An excellent LP that brings together a dozen tracks from some of Chris' lesser-known recordings for the Bethlehem label – originally released as eps and early 10" LPs. Emergency Ward!
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
A great little album cut by Nina Simone during the time she was working with Weldon Irvine – a live album that really has the lady stretching out, and showing off all the cool, complicated grooves she brought to a concert setting! Weldon did the arrangements, and they've got a very righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album

No Count Sarah
Mercury, 1958. Very Good-
The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations!
